Yes, it's my favourite preservation project in Toronto. For a long time I hoped the building would be saved as it truly was a diamond in the rough. The transformation has been magnificent.

The Booth Street complex. Some talk about making it a sort of 'Distillery-style entertainment district' They had better act fast, it's crumbling to the ground.

These are finally getting a reface but the reface looks almost as ugly

Not at all what I picture in my mind when I think of Ottawa! I guess all cities have their fare share of ugly ass architecture and neighbourhoods.

Edmonton also had a seedy bar called the Cecil, it was shut down and demolished in 2003, and it is where the Icon condo towers/Sobey's is now...

Aside from the poverty, the DTES is one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the country.

So this thread is for ugly buildings in good shape? I was following all those Ottawa buildings not in good shape. And ya without the grit the Hastings neighbourhood is quite beautiful and urban. It used to be the centre of Vancouver retail and goings on. Then the nationwide homeless population showed up and had easy access to any drug they wanted and presto. Its quite a bit better than it used to be even a couple of years ago ever since the Woodwards redevelopment occured.

I wasn't saying they had to be in good shape, I was saying that this was for irredeemable ugliness and tackiness. Architectural abominations. This kind of thing, but Canadian.

You had me in agreement til here, I think these neighbourhoods of little post WW2 houses are some of the nicest in the city.

They are so old now and each really seems to have built up some great individual character in all the years, siding, colours, little unique porches, etc etc

Here are some photos of Saint John, its a wonderful place but full of ugly! All photos from google maps.

The sad thing is the street shots, thats what basically all of Saint John looks like except for a few streets closer to the water. The city only invests in the areas tourist from cruise ships see, which is very little, the rest is left to fall to peices.

I always thought those big garment factories (I think?) were pretty cool in a stark, industrial sorta way. A friend lived across from some older versions on Casgrain. Very imposing on a narrow residential street - it probably wasn't a great place to live 50 years ago when they were in full swing.

Haha! I remember the first time I truly saw the ugly side of Montreal when my brother picked me up from the airport and drove me through the north side (just before the riots where someone was shot by police in 2007-8 ish). Until then I had only ever seen the south side. It was an educational experience.
