HSC is in the West Alexander neighbourhood. But yeah, most people consider that downtown.

Pretty sure HSC and St. B both service the downtown area equally. That is one of the odditites of Winnipeg is that all the major tramua center hospitals are clustered relatively close together.

In terms of cranes downtown, without any inside information I think the Fortress development will be underway before the end of the calendar year as well. The circulating information seems to suggest that it will be needing a crane too. I still hope this is for those surface lots of Graham across from the police hq.

Having a construction trade, not in heavy like this, but they will not bring in a crane till the time is needed, now think about the Alt, they are sitting stagnent right now, even though they are above ground. But The rental of a crane is very costly and Canada as a whole is very short on Cranes

CentrePoint was to be using a large crawler crane for the 5 storey podium and parkade(?) I believe. Then bring in the tower crane or two to build the towers.

Convention centre

The provincial government and city must not be too thrilled about this addition out by the Assiniboine downs. Surely this will take away some from the newly expanded convention centre downtown.

Expo Centre, 3977 Portage Ave

Construction of a 250,000-300,000 square-foot addition onto the existing exhibition centre to accommodate further space for trade shows and conventions. The addition will provide space in the building for construction of a 500-seat theatre.

$5, 000, 000

That sure is a hell of a lot lower than what our expansion downtown is gonna cost for roughly the same amount of added floor space.....

I seem to remember hearing of a proposed development out there a year or two ago. It included a mid sized arena to house a WHL team and some type of convention centre. Anybody remember that? I guess we'll hear more in the coming months.

But $5M doesn't get you much these days, especially when you're talking a quarter million square feet! Probably a steel shed type building or the like.

Wow. You're voice sounds extremely familiar to me.......

Couldn't agree more with you both, Winnipeg needs to start growing up, pun intended. Existing infrastructure is already sustainable by current development, why not start collecting taxes from building up in to the air?, where no additional infrastructure is needed but now collecting taxes from units up in the sky.

And about the exchange district, mixing new with the current heritage is a perfect mix. There's tons of empty lots, especially in the East Exchange, where modern buildings can meet the heritage lifestyle. Bannatyne Ave alone, from Waterfront to Main, has one HUGE surface lot east of Alive and two smaller ones in front of the Ashdown. Bring Waterfront style condo buildings there with retail at ground level and residential above. Starting making it a dense neighborhood.

I think I might know what this is....
Vike - is it a mystery tower, or is it a tower that we know about that wasn't originally planned as 36 storeys but now might be?

Ah thanks. I wonder what is officially "downtown" vs what people think of as downtown, and how it relates to what I consider "downtown"

Come of to think of it, Misericordia Hosp is also in the downtown area. That would make the 3 largest hospitals all in the core area, which certainly is interesting. Also explains the scale differences with Winnipeg's #1 hospital vs other similarly sized centres #1 hospitals

And re: fortress, I wonder if that is the rumoured 36 tower being hinted at or if its another separate development

This is likely meant for different kinds of conventions/trade shows than the WCC

I would guess agricultural trade shows?
$5M definitely won't get you much more than a big steel box.

the 36 storey mystery tower discussed was the fortress one.

the RRE thing is a pipe dream.....it will never happen...they have no money....and $5m gets you a cheap 18000 square foot building....even the cheapest, bare bones 300 000 sf building would cost at least $70m....would more likely cost over $100m.

the family centre at Assiniboine park was $4m and it is 10 000 sf.

I'm not sure how the Journal of Commerce gets their information but i had a conversation with the people at the EX and their budget was around $140 million. I guess things could have changed but that seems like a lot of change. Viking is right - $5 million doesn't get you much these days.

Regarding competing with the WCC - most of the shows the EX is targeting are agriculture in nature; livestock, farm equipment etc that never go to the WCC anyways so it seems that there would be very little overlap at all.

Good question. I have a lot of time on my hands right now (recovering from surgery) so I'll spend the morning researching this.

EDIT: Wiki has this definition, I don't think it is too far off the mark.

Downtown Winnipeg is centred around Portage Avenue and Main Street, and is bounded by the Assiniboine River on the south, Colony and Balmoral Streets on the west, Notre Dame Avenue, Princess Street, and Logan Avenue on the north, and the Red River on the east. It includes the Exchange District, Central Park, The Forks, and Winnipeg's Chinatown. The downtown area is roughly three square kilometres. Portage Avenue is the city's busiest thoroughfare. Winnipeg Square, the MTS Centre, Portage Place, and the flagship store of the Bay are all located on the downtown section of this street.

There sure are a lot of billboards up advertising dcondo, I saw three on the way to HSC this morning. They've done a nice job on their website too.

The City's officially designated downtown area is shown in the map below. I think it corresponds with what most people would probably consider to be "downtown", although some of the more northerly stretches (e.g., between Alexander and the CP tracks) have, over the past 100 years, gone from being an integral part of downtown Winnipeg to being much more marginal in nature. If you told the average Winnipegger "I'm going downtown", they would probably think of the areas around Portage & Main or Cityplace as compared to, say, Higgins and Main.

I don't think too many people would consider HSC to be downtown. Central yes, but not downtown. Even the most generous interpretation of downtown's western boundaries probably ends at around Isabel/Balmoral.

The map:

I wonder how they are selling.

The floorplans, finishings and amenities look excellent for the price. If I was looking for a downtown condo I would look there before the Exchange.
