Actually Viking I do have a real question for you. In the Canada section in a thread called 2013 Most Anticipated Projects in Your City, you posted this

drew, you are right....the worst part of my job specifically is the number of times great projects fail....i do conceptual design so i am involved at the front end when all the excitement is there....it always sucks when they die, or get built nothing like you wanted....anyone remember the rock and roll museum at the met?....that was one example....i am pretty good at this point at recognizing pretty early which ones stand a chance and which ones are dreamers....i know where to put my heart.

to clear this up a little...i have been working for about a year on what would have been the project of my career.....it was heading into the final phases and got yanked away.....it still may happen at a smaller scale, but i will not be involved personally anymore...which is why i still cant talk about it.....sometimes clients can be pretty heartless....it was a project that would have been a game changer for the city and for me personally....the emotional involvement and number of summer weekends i donated to them kind of upsets me now.....like the worst lap dance of my life.

its more of a personal disappointment than anything...imagine investing yourself emotionally for that long into something that your grand children would be proud of, only to have it pulled from under you at the last moment.

i probably shouldn't have even hinted at it, but it was such an exciting opportunity.

I'm more sorry for you Viking than the city. It sucks putting your heart into something that is taken away.

Understandable. Are you able to at least say what the reasons were as to why this project got yanked without saying what the project was? Would be nice to know the reasons for it's downfall. Zoning? NIMBY's? City Council?

Restaurateurs buy ex-hostel for student residence

STUDENTS from around the world could soon be calling the former Downtowner Motor Hotel their new home away from home.
The owners of Winnipeg's India Palace Restaurant -- Ashwani and Suroj Nagpal -- have purchased the former Ellice Avenue hotel-turned-hostel from the North Portage Development Corporation for about $2 million, and are spending more than a million dollars to convert it into a residence for foreign and out-of-town students.
They'll also be opening a 70-seat, internationally themed restaurant and a small cafeteria in the three-storey building, which is located on the southwest corner of Ellice Avenue and Kennedy Street. The restaurant will be open to the public, while the cafeteria will be used to feed the student residents, who will have meals included in their rent.
"The experience of our own children is the reason we're doing this," Ashwani Nagpal said in a written statement released on Friday. "They were disoriented and felt very alone when they first arrived in a new city to study. Finding accommodation, having your meals taken care of, is key to settling in to the real reason you're there -- to study and enjoy the student experience."

Where did it say it was a 36 story grocery store? In fact where is this 36 story tower that is so mythical............I was aiming at the fact so many people are so up in the air for a REAL so called grocery store in the downtown, thus the reason I added that..

Good news about the student housing, there is a real shorage of student housing in Winnipeg. Nice to see it's being run by an Indian family as there seems to be a huge influx of Indian students lately.

WHRC received funding approval to build a 10 unit condo complex at 422/426 Ross Avenue in the Centennial Neighbourhood as a means of providing a clustered approach to affordable homeownership and providing a greater number of homeownership opportunities on a smaller land footprint. This project will create another affordable homeownership model within the Centennial Community and aid in their efforts to increase homeownership and revitalize the neighbourhood. Construction drawings have been completed by architecture firm 5468796 Architecture Inc. and the project is currently being tendered. Project design was completed in collaboration with the Centennial Community Improvement Association. Construction is anticipated to start summer 2012.

The details on the new student housing seemed to be fairly sparse. One detail jumped out though -- food from the on-site, student-only cafeteira is a required part of their rent. Honestly this concerns me a little. This makes it sound like there are no private kitchens and almost makes it sound like a rooming house for students. The U of W has one student resident that is reported to be fairly nice to live in and another one is planned. This really makes me wonder who this private student residency is targetting and how long it will be before it comes up for redevelopment again.

At u of m it depends what building you're in. Some have optional meal plans but yes some are manditory. So its really not unusual for student housing.
