Building owner is looking at the space needs for the City hall, what remains in the building and is proposing to renovate the bottom floors to class A standard for the City to occupy long term, freeing up the majority of the building for the owner to lease to others.

It is looking good for the Potash project in the industrial park (East).
Could be up to 200 jobs?

Deep water project is still alive for the west side. In the city's hands now....hope they don't screw this up!

Another fire in a vacant building in the North End last night, this time at 168 Main Street. I expect this building to be torn down like the others before it.

I can't help but think HMCS Sackville should be a permanent fixture in Saint John. After all it was build in Saint John, not Halifax. After hundreds of years of extensive ship building it would be nice for SJ to have something to show for it, other than the unused dry-dock.

Could not agree more. Further, Saint John should be home to a shipbuilding museum on the waterfront as a tourist draw. Similar to how Mystic Connecticut is the US living museum of "seafaring", Saint John has a unique opportunity to boost its heritage as Canada's first shipbuilding port to the world.

A waterfront museum to act as an anchor for development would be great with the HMCS Sackville as well as a fully restored Marco Polo - a project that has been in talks for years and just never gets off the ground for some reason or another. If the province and city want to build tourism, they need to invest in unique ventures. Saint John's unique historic role as Canada's shipbuilding capital should be promoted for tourism...not forgotten.

Marco Polo (TO SCALE) lol. To be a good tourist destination there needs to be many unique features that are unique to that area. SJ is one Canadas most storied cities. There are so many things that should be done. Marco Polo, Sailing ambassador for Saint John, partridge Island, immigration, shipbuilding just to name a few. BUT we did give Digby back their lighthouse, maybe Halifax could give SJ our ship

Didn't the mini Marco Polo already get built? Where is it? Saint John really should have a full-sized replica permanently moored in the harbour. There could be a restaurant in it or something. That would be a huge tourist draw. Not this scale model thing. People would want to see the real deal.

I think so. The mini marco is to be land locked. Probably going to be a fixture at Fundy Quay. But I want a Marco Polo II build for sea!

Any chance Sj could provide some sort of niche shipbuilding/drydock service, like wooden sailing ships for wealthy seafarers? Probably sounds ridiculous but some sort of small scale tie to Sj's history which doesn't rely on govt contracted AND which would be a tourist attraction in its own right would be very cool.

I hear you. I could see it, though a long shot. Very cool thought.

The Marco Polo is built. It's sitting in storage somewhere on the west side because Ogden is holding out for the City/Province to give him a spot on the harbourfront for it.

Saint John: 1980's to Today

Came across and old uptown photo and thought it would be interesting to compare it to a newer one. Back then, there was no Mercantile Centre, no Harbour Station, Red Rose was completely intact, the Y was still there...

Both pics were taken from almost the exact same angle - that's pretty neat!

As a kid I called it "the big drum set". It was telecommunications equipment for NBTel. It was removed as technology changed.

re: Building scale models and shipbuilding museums: $$$. We should probably still be building ships here, but you can take that up with Irving and the union at the time if you all so desire.

re: Uptown comparison: First, thanks for using my photo Second that's quite a change considering that the city's population is more or less the exact same (or even less) than it was in the 1980s. When it was torn down I was really sad to see the Y go but the law courts is such a large building that it almost makes up for it. One thing that Helladog forgot to mention was the Tile Mile! The Mercantile Centre also fills in a good amount, as well.

You can see how much the trees have grown in those ~30 years. In the 80s you could see the Gothic Arches over the other buildings on the left but the trees have grown so that view is obstructed. You can also see this with the trees below the Red Rose Tea building.
