Plaza 1909, current status:

The second image shows the relationship between Plaza 1909 and the existing Swiss Chalet/Royal Bank/Second Cup development and the interconnected driveways (a smart idea)

The only confirmed tenants I know of so far for Plaza 1909 are Pita Pit and Papa John's Pizza. I imagine there are others.

One thing I really like about this section of Mountain Road between Gorge and Lonsdale is that you can now walk all the way from Second Cup to the Subway in Valhalla Place by crossing parking lots rather that takingn the sidewalk alongside (the busy) Mountain Road. It is certainly a lot more pleasant!

There was more news on the expansion to the Magnetic Hill Zoo in the T&T today.

- The cost of the expansion will be $1.4M, not the $1.1M I previously reported.
- The feds are contributing $300k, to match the donation already announced by the city. The province is expected to kick in a similar amount which will leave $500k for public fundraising efforts.
- Opening is expected in 2014.

This will be a major refurbishment, resulting in the creation of an Asian habitat at the zoo. 13 current exhibits will be dismantled and replaced with 7 new exhibits. I presume that species that don't eat one another may cohabitate, allowing for the reduction in the total number of displays. The zoo already does that with some of their current exhibits. By reducing the number of displays, this gives each exhibit more space. I know that some of the zoo's current residents (bears & lions for example) appreciate their new larger enclosures (see below

)

The main reason for the expansion is to allow the return of Amur tigers and leopards to the zoo. These are big crowd favourites and should solidify the position of the zoo as one of the major tourist attractions in the province.

There was a presentation before Moncton City Coincil this evening regarding the proposed North End Community Centre that may be built next to Evergreen Park School.

Because of input at public consultations earlier, it was proposed that it might be best to proceed with this project in two stages.

The first stage would encompass the building more as less as originally proposed:

This portion of the project would cost about $11M and would encompass things such as a cafe, walking track, climbing wall, active play areas, indoor rollerblading and skatebording facility, splash park, community meeting rooms etc. The building would also include the physical plant to support whatever is included in phase two of the project.

The second phase would include two of the following three proposals. There isn't the physical space at the proposed site for all three proposals. The possible components for phase two are a community swimming centre, an indoor tennis facility or a community hockey rink.

I kind of think the tennis facility is a given. It has community support and would be cheaper to maintain than either the rink or the pool. If I was to bet, I think there may be more support in the neighbourhood for the pool than the rink. As such, I will go out on a limb and suggest phase two will be the tennis facility and a pool.

The City of Moncton has set aside $200k in the 2013 capital budget for initial design work for the North End Community Centre to be built next to Evergreen Park School. Some of this money will also be spent to look at options for repurposing the coliseum presuming the events centre proceeds.

The former dental building at Trinity/Mountain is now nearly unrecognizable as a new commecial strip.

About four of the dentists in the original iteration of the building stayed put during the renovations. The rest of the building will be available for commercial/retail lease, probably in the spring.

Two things:

1) - The Head Shoppe is opening a location in the Lounsbury Centre.
2) - I believe that the Harvey's near Mountain/Trinity is now open.

Did you notice if there are sidewalks and cycling lanes across the entire length of the street yet? The last time I was there (~August-September), the section from the roundabout up to ~Rural Estates Rd was still narrow and decrepit. I never felt at ease on my bike on that street, but it's still preferable to Mountain.

They have done both ends of Ryan St, around Northrup Frye School and Ecole le Sommet. The stretch of road in between still has to be done. This stretch probably still measures a couple of km. The city still plans to eventually put curbs and sidewalks along the full length of the road, but I don't know how long that will take.

For what it's worth, the section of Ryan between the roundabout and Evergreen Dr is very nice. It is curbed with sidewalks on both sides and the street is wide enough for bike lanes. In addition, there is probably no reason why the city couldn't also make a direct connection between Ecole le Sommet and the (nearly adjacent) northwest trail. I could easily see a branch trail installed leading directly to the school property. This would be a luxury that neither Evergreen Park School or Northrup Frye School would have.

The Exterior signage has gone up for Pita Pit on the unit second to the left at Plaza 1909. They are no where near to opening, but would appear to be the furthest along in construction.

This is another tenant from The Main St. Superstore that has departed. That location is now closed.

Interesting. With the Zellers store departing from the Superstore Mall, I wonder if the place will be undergoing wholesale renovations like the Northwest Centre.

Does anyone know what might be afoot?

Every Zellers store is selling everything. Shelving, racks, hangers, hooks literally everything. One of my friends told me they sold the desk right out from under the store manager at the store in Summerside here.

I was just in that mall yesterday

Ya when HBC closes a store they go all the way

they did the same thing for The Bay here...I have a really creepy picture of all the manikins bunched together to be sold off...sort of a twilight zone human cattle ranch or something haha!

I took a pic of those too...

I noticed The Bay had some fixtures labelled "Montreal" which I assumed were being sent back to HQ. Not so with Zellers.

Not sure if this has been posted yet or not, but D&M sports has relocated to the strip mall shared by Jitter Bean cafe adjacent to Mr. Lube.

I have seen this in there for a couple of weeks now, but could never remember what the 2 letters were.

I was not aware, but it seems they are a sports card retail store.
