Odd timing for sure, but I think it will prove a popular decision.

It can be argued he has improved the farm system, the big club's record under his reign was worse than that of the much despised JFJ.

hahaha. I'm guessing he was in disagreement with management with the luongo trade. You know your org is a shitshow when non hockey poeple fire the GM because of his refusal to make or not make a specific trade.

Last Week: 4 Pittsburgh Penguins (51-25-6)
Sidney Crosby was always respected as a player, but now he's probably a lot better-liked among his peers. He was seen as a solid soldier for the NHLPA, earning lots of public and private praise from grateful members. Will that mean he'll get a free pass in games? Nope -- no friends in hockey except those wearing the same logo on the front. But I'll predict that Crosby will, in fact, receive a higher level of "respect" on the ice, which is why I think he'll lead the league in scoring. No, he didn't play for anyone during the lockout and there could be some rust on him, but he'll also be rested and raring to go. Losing Jordan Staal will hurt, but Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are still the class of the league among forwards.

Last Week: 2 New York Rangers (51-24-7)
If they don't drop dead from the effects of a short, intense training camp run by taskmaster coach John Tortorella, they'll contend for the Stanley Cup again. Expectations are high now that Rick Nash can finally make his Broadway debut. He and Brad Richards will be a deadly duo, and Henrik Lundqvist is still Henrik Lundqvist. We've been Torts-deprived for too long now with regard to his famously terse postgame press conferences. They should be even better during a pressure-cooker short season.

Last Week: 25 Edmonton Oilers (32-40-10)
Check with me in a month or two, but it says here that they will get off to a great start -- which really ups the odds of getting into the playoffs. Why the reason for Oil optimism? Because Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and newcomer D-man Justin Schultz all played regularly during the lockout in the AHL and will be that much further along than the players who were limited to informal skates or shinny matches for charity. Eberle had 51 points in 34 games for Oklahoma City, while Schultz had 48 in 34. Granted, big questions remain in goal and defense, but what an offense this should be.

Welcome to Calgary.

The owners interfere with management operations all the time.

As for that list... Edmonton is either going to be scary good, or yet again really bad. I have a hard time seeing them being mediocre this season. I think they'll surprise a lot of people no matter which way they go.

We need an exorcist... The ghost of Ballard has obviously possessed Tom Anselmi. This timing makes zero sense, unless they fired him because he didn't want to do the trade for Luongo that Gillis wanted, which, given the rumoured price, makes me now terrified. I think this means the Nonis term will just be Bell/Rogers with their hand up his ass like a muppet.

He probably said something nasty to someone very high up,remember the man is really a pompous ass, he reminds me of a NFL coach (it's an honour to be in the same room as them) didn't he at one time go up against the holy man Cherry (like he was going to win that one)

What happened was:

Ownership saw a chance at making the playoffs this year as the season is short and the likelihood is higher. Thus, ownership wanted Luongo to make a push for the playoffs. Burke says no, and they can him. Nonis is willing to come, be the yes man for the owners, and will trade for Luongo when the CBA is fully signed and camps open. Nonis did the same thing when he replaced Burke in Vancouver.

Nonis is a better GM than people think, but ya I do agree that the firing was over Lu (at least that was the final straw) and that the deal will not happen.

As a canucks fan I hope it is the rumoured Gardiner and Kadri for Lu deal. Not a complete steal but good compensation for a goalie that is one of the best when he's on his game.

They keep making Boston better, now they want to make the Canucks better. Both at their own expense.

What's next, are they gonna trade the rest of their overrated saviours to Mtl, just to make Nicko and I officially bestest buds?

Schedule came out around 11pm EST. Fucking finally. Not that it was hard to guess opening nights, anyone who works even remotely close to an NHL organization or arena has known for a few days already. Still, I think the NHL underestimated how annoyed fans would be waiting a needless week to start making plans for the season. They could have released a preliminary schedule days ago, "subject to the CBA MOU". Whatever.

With 48 games, it's not quite balanced. In-division, you play 5 games against 2 teams and 4 games against 2 teams. Of course the Flames get to see Minnesota 5 fucking times. Ah well, they're usually easy wins at least, albeit snoozefests.

Very short home stands and road trips this year. And something we very rarely see - 2 road games in a row in the same building. Should make for an interesting season.

Leafs play in Ottawa twice. The Senators website is suggesting that their lowest ticket prices will be $15, which is half of what they were last season.

If all goes according to plan, I plan to be at a Senators game, hopefully when Toronto is visiting.

Tough schedule for the Jets with the travel, but should be rough on visiting teams too without the western conference teams in the mix.

Minnesota no longer plays the trap, and with the Flames adopting a more offensive style under Hartley these games should be quite entertaining.

You do realize Minnesota signed Parise and Suter, yeah?

I'm really interested to see how the conferences play out with teams only playing within those conferences. Should make for an interesting (and more accurate) depiction and seeding come playoff time.

Seahawks are done, so now its onto hockey...

With this short season and no preseason games, anything can happen. I predict the Coilers will weasel their way into the play-offs, and who knows, the Canucks might not make it.

I myself consider this an * season. The first thing I think of when I hear about that New Jersey Stanley Cup win is the shortened season. But that's just me.
