If those are the three options, I really hope they go with the sample behind the two construction workers. The other two look like the glass on 500 N. Lake Shore Drive...which makes me worried, as Related is also the developer over there.

The river corridor is no place for that chintzy, fugly glass. ...hopefully they realize that as well.

if you're referring to the lasalle-wacker building, no, it's very much occupied and is one of the city's art deco treasures. What would lead you to assume it's abandoned? There aren't many unoccupied buildings in downtown Chicago.

I don't think there are any unoccupied skyscrapers, although some of the skinny buildings along Wabash might be unused.

I think he's noticing the center column of windows on the East side of the Lasalle-Wacker building Steely, as they look like they've been removed? Is it possible that they are using the elevators in the existing building to move crews up and down until a construction elevator is erected?

No that is the existing design and how the stairwells/elevators are configured.

It looks to me that the stairs are designed like those at the Tribune Tower, that is with no windows. It's sort of like a partially enclosed fire escape.

Unlike the building's tower crane, the elevator was never disassembled. It's located on the west side and can be seen behind some scaffolding in the last photo.

seen here in 2008 - note how it punches through the ramps on each parking deck, this is why the shell couldn't be used as a parking garage when work stalled.

Very interesting, I hadn't realized that Lasalle Wacker or the Tribune Tower had exposed stairwells. I'll add that knowledge to my stockpile of useless trivia factoids.

I have to correct what I said now that I found a floor plan of the building. The Tribune Tower doesn't have open stairwells, but you do have to go outside to get to them. From the corridor, one passes trough a double door on to a square balcony (where the windows are missing on the north and south sides of the building immediately behind the main tower mass). From there one passes through another double door into the stairwell. I am guessing this may have been an early method of providing an additional fire barrier to the stairs and for keeping smoke from billowing directly into the stairs from the corridor.
