As far as I know, they're working on it now. Those demo permits have all been approved, and the store was being gutted, last we saw.

Yeah all "disapproved" means is "not yet approved". I'm sure it will be an iterative process with the DOB, particularly on a project of this size and scope.
We don't know the exact height. We know it will be at least 1,550 ft., because that's what the permits indicate.
Yeah, at least is the best way to put it. Barnett said the design was very preliminary, and they've only recently announced architects who will push the design into its final form. It's very likely the tower is higher, but 1,550 feet is good either way.

so just how bad is it that the building permit was denied? is it not that big of a deal?
It's not "bad" at all. Just part of the process. All work needs a permit from the buildings department, and everything must be in order. Permits are filed until everything is correct. Even if approved though, that permit would have been revised with a later permit, as plans become more complete.

Moving forward, developers will have to be much more innovative: This week, I met with a mega-developer planning a rather exciting new building. It was refreshing to hear him talk about the need for innovation and beauty before dollars per square foot…..all are important, but the blind focus on pricing alone may prove to be a wake-up call to many developers and their bankers in the coming months.
