Not often we get an Ottawa update. We need them on this page too.

Quite a few more in the city, but these were the only ones I took pics of.

I wouldn't worry too much about how quickly Montreal grows compared to a place like Laval. Any slowdown probably says more about a lack of new greenfield building sites than the health of the city. It is important to know what's suburban sprawl and what's infill, but you can't necessarily get that by looking at the city level. Many of the faster growing cities in Canada are just more suburban, while the slow-growing places are already built up.

The slab architecture in Halifax was at its worst around 2000 or so, because there had been little construction since about 1990 and prior to that there was a long period where exposed concrete was used on buildings. Other cities like Toronto and Vancouver were pretty similar. Vancouver had more 90's construction but Toronto definitely had a 1970's/80's feel as late as 2000 or so.

I also remember seeing a lot more retro 70's interiors back in the 1990's, but their number is dwindling now. I hope that some cities will recognize the value of 1960's and 70's architecture before it's torn down, like 1900-1930's architecture was demolished in the 60's and 70's. Often what people consider attractive depends more on fickle fashion trends than on inherent value.

Close. In English, flawless is... I guess, kind of a gay way... to say there is nothing wrong with it. It has no flaws, or mistakes.

If I'm not mistaken, Montreal island had more than 2 million people in the 50's. Now it is aroung 1.9 million and growing.

People have to differentiate Montreal (island) vs Montreal (city). The first one is 499 km² with 1.9 million inhabitants and the latter is 365 km² of land and 1.65 million people.

When you look at it this way, it is impressive to see that Montreal's 499 km² island almost has twice the population of Ottawa's and Calgary's 5000-6000 km² CMAs (or Edmonton's 9,500 km²)

Montreal island has never been more populous than it is now. Population peaked in 1971 at 1.95 million in 1971 and then suffered a major decline as the economy flunked and reactionary/paranoid anglos foreseeing the end of the world packed up their bags split town. Montreal island has probably reached 2 million by now (just not officially yet) and the metro has now reached 4 million, again not officially though.

And yes dirt devil, the island is dense, but not as dense as it could or should be. The truth is, that outside of the central neighbourhoods (downtown, Sud-Ouest, Verdun, Plateau, Outremont, Westmount, Cote-des-Neiges, Villeray, NDG, HoMa and the rest) the island remains suburban, industrial and at some points even rural.

The island could easily welcome another 2 million within new mixed medium-density hoods no problem!

Tower II (Yellow tower) of University City in Calgary has now erected the first level of cladding including the pastel yellow paneling. Looks quite nice. This is going to be a great complex. The orange tower has cladding up to the fifth floor now I believe.

The first large building on the Herald Square Tower I site has been completely demolished and cleared. Demolition on the main building should start any time this month.

Keynote II is totally topped out with cladding only a couple floors from the roof.

Pics tomorrow.

Apparently the developer of Thompson Residences has won its OMB case. This will now be 12 storeys on Stewart Street and 15 storeys on King Street. I can't find any construction pics as UT is down, but the crane has already been installed.

That's pretty sweet. Almost looks a bit like the housing pods from Total Recall.

Some recent pics of phase 1 of River City Condos. Cionstruction of phase 2 began recently. The architect for this project is Saucier & Perrotte out of Montreal (also the architect for the Thompson Residences above).

Fashion House on King Street West. The uniform red curtains in the rendering are confirmed to be part of the final design, and are referenced in the purchase agreements. The architect is Core.
