a few pics from the new design of the detroit-windsor bridge. the piers will apparently be 900ft tall, and the bridge will actually be curved. (incase that wasn't already obvious) with this and the new 401 extension to it, it will be a very impressive entrance to Canada, that is for sure!

1) Amazing!
2) Heat those diagonal cable stays or watch out for falling ice

That is amazing! I like how it curves like the Garden City Skyway that I posted on the last page. This might be my new favourite bridge once it is built.

Is that the approved design or just a proposal?

Nothing is approved yet although it wouldn't be at all surprising if Zoli ended up with it.

Thanks for all the expert analysis on bridge construction costing Keep in mind: The bridge is NOT a simple span, it is a bascule bridge with a an expensive lift system to accommodate marine traffic. The project costs also include: a complete re-alignment of the west approach, realignment & improvements to the east approach, a multi-use path bridge over the western lanes, relocation of services & an improved navigation channel to bring it up to current marine standards

Plus I understand it will have very cool LED lighting

At 900 ft tall, this would be the tallest bridge on the continent?!

Too bad there is no drawing for the new Port Mann bridge or this one in the diagrams If I could draw, that would be my goal

Yeah, there should be more bridge drawings on the diagrams. Will be an amazing bridge if built as depicted above!

And also taller than any building on the Detroit skyline - even the Renaissance Center. Imagine that, the tallest, proudest buildings in your city, dwarfed by a bridge pier.

haha well in all fairness, they would be some of the nicest and tallest bridge piers ever built so I think people could live with it

How tragic. I just can't imagine what that would be like.

You mean, like NYC back when the Brooklyn Bridge was completed?

spent 5 minutes making a google sketchup model to see how it would look on the detroit skyline.. (if you could call it that, it is over 6km away from downtown)

I'm not saying it like it's some horrible thing. It just gives you an idea how massive it would be. A bridge with towers nearly the height of First Canadian Place. That's huge.

A personal favourite, the West Montrose "kissing bridge" in Waterloo Region. Last covered bridge in Ontario. Currently open only to horse and buggy traffic (seriously!).
