That was more a result of the overwhelming demand for asphalt across the GOA as a result of stimulus funding than anything else.
There were so many 'shovel ready' projects that got the go ahead, and they all needed asphalt at the same time. So the plants helped the contractors comply.

If by 'convinced' you mean 'paid' then yes, they were very convincing -haha

But yes - it can, and frankly, should be done if the demand warrants.

So far it's mostly restaurants. I look forward to going to Joey and Whole Foods, but they need some clothing stores. I'm not really excited yet. Looking forward to more announcements.

All the restaurants seem to be of a kind that would cater to a football/hockey/crowd

Perhaps you're confused... One does not simply 'buy' clothes in the Glebe
They must knit, by hand, in front of a fire, with folk guitar playing.

Kidding aside, yes the restaurant scene is starting to look pretty good, and the grocery/LCBO are both pretty badly needed. (unless of course you like paying $11 for milk up the road)

A clothing store wouldn't hurt, but they may have trouble pulling clientele from rideau once re-done

It's strange but folks seem to want to walk for food, booze, bars, etc but seem quite content to drive for clothing.

I should have been more specific.
There are two grocery stores that are either awful in terms of quality produce & selection (Pretoria) or drastically overpriced (McKeens).

They sell staples like sealtest milk (5.99) or butter (5.49) for 20-50% more than stores in the burbs or the nearby macs. And they have some specialty milks that sell for over $10, but yes i was exaggerating a little on that one.
Same goes for flour, sugar, eggs, juice and a host of other products.

As for the LCBO there are two small, rather run down LCBO's both near the highway, and then the closest to the south i believe is southkeys/walkley

I was under the impression the clemow LCBO was to close upon opening of the landsdowne one, is that still the case?

In either case, Preston is certainly more lacking than the glebe in these services, but there seems to be some frustration with the existing services amongst locals in the glebe also.

All of the LCBO's that you mentioned as well as Loblaws amd possibly McKeen's Metro have free surface parking at their doors.

The LCBO at Pretoria as well as Loblaws, are quick in and out from the 417 and caters to the Golden Triangle as well.

The LCBO at Bank & Clemow has its own parking lot and is car accessible from O'Connor, Lyon, Percy and Bronson.

The Billings Bridge LCBO is accessible from Riverside in both directions.

If I'm picking up a few bottles of wine and my favourite juice for the weekend, I'll want to use my car and not waste time finding a parking spot or even pay for it and, as well, I'll certainly avoid game times because of traffic lineups.

I'm not sure where the Lansdowne LCBO will get their customers from.

You last three ideas are OK but the first two (picnickers and sneaking booze in) are officially illegal and also... not always likely to be successful attempts.

Well, for a start, there are 250 condo units on site, an unknown number going in kitty corner on the Beer Store site and a whole lot of seniors across the street.

I have no concrete stats to back this up, but I would expect that somewhere north of 50% of Glebe LCBO customers arrive on foot/bike if the numbers are consistent with the recent Preston/Wellington West studies. The repeated message of those types of studies is that parking is not as critical as people seem to believe.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the other LCBOs close, but that isn't currently planned.
