^ AY doesn't build office towers, they lease them.

David Staples is a goof. I used to wish we had our own Mario Toneguzzi. Now that we've got him, I regret wishing that.

Pardon my ignorance, but if there is all that demand for towers/density around the arena site why is nothing being built above the arena? Is it too cost prohibitive/difficult to build that way?

probably because it's too hard (yes, you can translate that to too cost prohibitive/difficult) to hold something up above an arena until we perfect sky hooks to hang things from... sight lines for fans and skating surfaces for players don't work too well with columns coming down through them on a 30' x 30' grid...

Structural would be incredibly expensive and potentially not even feasible.

What would you support the tower with? It can be done, but the cost is prohibitive.

New rendering of the proposed Edmonton arena district released on Dec. 12, 2012 as the Katz Group made a presentation to city hall.
EDMONTON - The city has about six weeks left to reach an arena deal with Oilers owner Daryl Katz or an agreement will never be reached, Mayor Stephen Mandel says.

“We have been very clear with Mr. Katz about where the boundaries are, and I hope he understands that … If he doesn’t, he doesn’t. We have gone as far as we’re going to go,” Mandel said Tuesday in a year-end interview.

Interesting...a pity she didn't introduce this in the fall sitting of the legislature

RT @ElectDanielle: @dstaples We're working on a gaming proposal that could potentially fund both arenas without direct tax dollars. #wrp

RT @ElectDanielle: When we release it ...we hope the #pcaa & Mayor Mandel don't reject it out of hand just because it comes from #wrp.

I don't think Danny Smith's plan is going to come to fruition in time for the City deadline on the deal . And if her proposed idea has legs...it could be just as well used to fund other public infrastructure...like the "other" Performing Arts Centre...being planned.

The last time a lottery was used to try to raise money for the nhl, it generated barely any revenue. Why would their proposal reach any different result?

I have no idea...Danny said she knows all of that background and they have found a way. So lets wait and see what she pulls out of her bag of tricks.

High-stakes fight over new arena

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, December 27, 2012

The downtown arena soap opera had more highs and lows in 2012 than Nikolai Khabibulin's goals-against average.

Last spring, the building's oil-drop design was released to mostly positive reviews and councillors voted to push ahead with work on the now $475-million project.

Things seemed on track to complete a deal by yearend with Oilers owner Daryl Katz...

NHL arena puts Arizona city in penalty box

Bloomberg

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

CREDIT: File, Christian Petersen, Getty Images
Glendale, Ariz., has doled out $50 million in the last two years to keep the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes playing at Jobing.com Arena.

Glendale's bet on becoming the Phoenix area's sports and entertainment hub is resulting in higher taxes, fired workers and rising penalties on its debt.

The city confronts new budget cuts after agreeing last month to pay $308 million over the next 20 years to keep the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes, which had the worst attendance in the NHL last season...

Wildrose proposes lottery to help fund Edmonton arena

Quote:
EDMONTON - Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said Thursday the province can help fund a new Edmonton arena by introducing a rebranded Keno lottery game.

The game has been successful in raising money in British Columbia and is already available in Alberta, it need only be expanded here, she said.

“We believe this could be a solution that makes sense for everybody involved,” Smith said in a statement.

“The city of Edmonton would get a magnificent downtown facility, the Edmonton Oilers would get a new home and Alberta taxpayers wouldn’t be on the hook for any of it.”

Smith said Keno is a digital gaming program that raised just over $3.1 million in Alberta last year and she believes it could generate $196 million annually if it is expanded.

In B.C., the game is played in about 4,000 locations - including bars and pubs - and generated nearly $235 million in 2012.

^ they have Keno in bars in BC but they don't have slots. I'd question the amount of raiseable cash, because Keno is only going to appeal to the same people who'd otherwise — on the slots... so really there's no net benefit.. it's just going to take the money that currently goes to other programs and re-allocate it... and that's not a good idea either.
