Well, I wasn't going to crush the guy about KV being solely dependent on SJ because I always play the role of forum pessimist/realist and it bums me out sometimes.

Also, Happy Page 400 everyone!

I apologize for my comments on the suburbs, I was just trying to get us off the topic of bashing other cities, I just hate coming on here and reading 3 pages of who has more and whose better.

I am not a fan of the suburbs, I could do without them, and yes I know that they took some of the population, but we have to remember not everyone who moved to the burbs was from right here in Saint John, a lot of the people who left here left for the west and other places do to lack of jobs here at the time.

and don't forget South Street Seaport in Manhattan - that's what I thought of when I first heard mention of the name South Market Wharf. I hope to see our waterfront eventually become a mini version of that - a wide variety of restaurants, retail and great use of refurbished historic properties.

We have a GOLD MINE in the SJ waterfront - we just need to capitalize on it. Just think of how vibrant the waterfront would be if we could attract 5 or 6 new restaurants/pubs (The Keg, for one), a new hotel, apartments/condos and a few strong anchor (pun) retail tenants.

Even before the 'South Market Wharf' is completed, I think more needs to be done to attract business to the existing properties on Water Street. The little shops that have already opened are somewhat underwhelming - to put it politely. They don't attract people - customers stop in if they happen to be walking by.

Even though we already have enough of them - I think a brand like Starbucks would attract the hordes - it would be instantly recognizable to every single person coming off the cruise ships - they would smell it coming down the gangway - we would only have to worry about the daily stampede that it would create. Also, a Starbucks wouldn't occupy too much space - it would act as bait for all of the others clammering to set-up shop.

Westin South Market Wharf sounds more appealing than Westin Fundy Quay
Or whatever brand name is on hotel

Has there been any more talk of revitalizing Partridge Island, and restoring public access?

The island is an extremely important piece of Saint John & Canadian history and fixing it up and restoring public access would be a great tourist draw for the city.

Alley Gria is moving to the former location of Mexicali Rosas. No word on whether they are changing their name to just Gria in the absence of an alley.

I agree with these sentiments. As a New Brunswicker, I'm just as excited about the cruise ship terminals in Saint John and the prospects of redeveloping the Coast Guard site as I am about the proposed events centre in downtown Moncton. New Brunswick is a small enough community and the three major southern cities are close enough together that we should all be rejoicing in each others success.

Of course rivalries exist and sometimes competition happens when we are all fighting for the same thing but it's important to keep in mind that a successful Moncton is good for Saint John, and vice versa too.....

.

Couldnt agree more. With the cruise ship money coming in you are already seeing the area blossom. This has a cyclical affect, more money, more development and of course that development leads to more money.

We are in a very strong position right now.

Indeed.

A successful Moncton and a successful Saint John means more revenues for the province, meaning resources may be pooled and eventually allocated toward large public investments in both cities, adding diversity and strength to the industries of both cities.

Sorry this is suburban information

I have to say, I'd love to have something like this in SJ, with the running track and rock climbing.. I like the options. If something does happen in SJ, I hope it's more than just hockey rinks.

I'm curious what it might cost to do so.

I guess it depends on what they'd like to do.

Are the structures remaining on the island of any historical significance? Are they ruins?

I'd love to see replicas of some of the original buildings rebuilt, but that's probably way out of the cards budgetwise.

The amount of history on that island is just fascinating though.

The R-Plex!

What would this mean for the Exhibition Association's proposed field house?

5.1 million dollars for establishing safe breakwater access, walking trails, interpretive signs. It's certainly a waste that we're not interpreting the island, its significance to Canada's immigration history can't be overstated.

We'll see if Rothesay follows through. Years ago there were plans on the walls of the arena to add another sheet of ice. Now that the QPlex was built (without Rothesay) I guess those plans were shelved. Is Rothesay willing to take on a facility that may or may not run a deficit like the QPlex currently does in Quispam? This all just seems like a anything you can do I can do better situation with their neighbours.

There are tunnels if I recall correctly.

Partridge Island

I know it's not feasible but how cool would it be to rebuild the island in 3 major parts 1 part of the island to represent the WWII time, 1 part quarantine station and 1 part WWI . It could be like Kings landing or le village acadien where people could be dressed in get up of that time period and do re-enactments. I think it would be as popular if not more popular than the Citadel in NS. ?

I went over A while back I have pics on my Website Look in my Profile

Lol. Probably Brunswick Square, 80metres which was built in 1976.

Or maybe the Mercantile Centre, which was built in the early 90s, although at only 30m it's a very low high rise.

When people say "everything in Saint John is old", they mean it.
