There is now a statue of Gandhi on the South side of the Museum. Landscaping has been underway for a couple of weeks now. I will take pictures once I rid myself of this ridiculous cold.

Gandhi was an amazing man and did a lot for his people but what exactly is his statue doing in the middle of the prairies in Winnipeg? Isn't the CMHR about Canadian human rights or will the museum be about world human rights or human rights of all of mankind.

In today's Free Press there is a comment following the story on the Holodomor that touches on this,

"There is a very important reason why those horrors and the ethnic hatred that it fomented were left by our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents on the other side of the ocean after WW2. It enabled Jews, Germans, Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, Czechs, Italians, Greeks, French, English, Irish, Scots and other ethnic groups to peacefully co-exist as neighbours in the North End of Winnipeg and other parts of Canada.

Old World scab-picking threatens the peace our ancestors died for. That is why the Canadian Museum for Human Rights must feature 100% Canadian content."

Thanks for the photo update Morty. I'm not a big fan of the way the tower relates to the rest of the building but I think it will be a landmark regardless, and a very impressive building inside.

I disagree with you rrskylar. I think that the museum should have a global outlook. I'm living in The Hague at the moment and the internationalisation of the city is very impressive. The city really engages with global issues. I think Canada needs to stop being so parochial. Human rights are by their very nature universalising.

We have a statue of Gandhi in the middle of downtown Saskatoon incidentally. Maybe it's a prairie thing?

This is really getting embarassing. I wonder if the Free Press will carry this story?

The Canadian Museum for Human rights is seeing an exodus of employees from its ranks, with many staff blaming indecision and political interference on the part of management and the museum’s board.

Of the 38 employees who have left since the museum first started hiring, 24 have been fired or have quit.

Contracts for another 14 have expired

That museum has things in it to see. It is worth going to. The CMHR will just have televisions, which we all have at home.

Come on Riverman, they won't just be televisions but interactive displays where one can push actual buttons and have flashing lights appear on giant maps, push another button and a recording will tell you just how many people died in what conflict, to cool down after all the excitment you will be able to sit and compose yourself by a reflective pool with dyed blue water and take in the giant concrete vastness that is the CMHR. Can't wait.

When I visited the Imperial War Museum in London their Holocaust exhibit was mostly TV screens. Of course they were dressed into the "set". There were also physical exhibits: artifacts, dioramas, letters etc. The "experience" of walking thought was quite jarring.

But back to the point, Interactive and non interactive displays if used correctly can do a very good job of conveying information in a engaging way.

the clear section at the top of the tower was flloodlit this morning. wasn't very bright but actually looked quite spectacular. makes me kind of understand why the bottom half is so much darker if emphasis is more focused on its appearance at night.

We went skating at the Forks yesterday and the Museum truly is an amazing piece of architecture. I can just imagine how great it will look with all the construction equipment gone and the landscaping complete.

.....just between you and me, I'm thinking of taking out that horrid Scotia Bank Stage. Don't tell the authorities.

I was driving home tonight at 2am, I saw the light on the top of the spire. Is that whats its supposed to be? I have always thought it would be a brighter light, shooting a beam up in the sky? But it looked like to be just construction lights illuminating inside and nothing more. Looks cheap.

Why does a museum need to be a "truly amazing piece of architecture"? Have you heard of the "Bilbao Anomaly"?

While I am all for good architecture I am very much against blowing your whole load on the build and nothing on the exhibits.

I guess time will tell if we have a Bilbao Guggenheim or a flop.
