Edmonton has proper (or at least what I consider in my mind proper) diamond interchanges in many other areas of the city but these ones along the yellow head are strange. I personally don't like them since I found them somewhat confusing with all the curve turning plus right angled turning in a very cramped space.

Still it was the price to pay to make yellow head free flowing and if something like that happened at certain intersections in Winnipeg along Kenaston/Bishop perhaps that would be fine one day. However I only see a select few intersections getting that treatment.

Speaking of which, is the new intersection at Bishop/Kenaston with Kenaston south finished? I was under the impression there was going to be some off ramp or something to keep traffic flow consistent onto bishop akin to the Concordia overpass on Lagimodiere but...surprise surprise it's just a fresh set of lights

Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure the (not too far in the future) plans for the north 59/Perimeter interchange calls for a flyover. That's based on what I've read here in the past.

This is my point exactly. Glad someone from the Winnipeg Free Press published this......

" A $30-million down payment could easily finance $300 million worth of rapid-transit connections. But this mayor and this city council would sooner spend it on traffic signals, all to speed the flow of vehicles crawling between one big-box retail store to another."

I don't understand why you're quoting this article.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/columnists/katz-vs-congestion-182710291.html

It's a good article but doesn't support your arguments for more freeways.

They probably didn't get removed, they likely got moved to the transit thread.

You guys make me laugh at times. I make a few posts about keeping PnM closed to Ped traffic and 90% of you go and say it only promotes people driving their cars, yet here you ALL are for the most part wanting friggen freeways. I have to shake my head . And who gives a rats fanny about Ikea and the mess that is. So what you put some fancy interchange / freeway their, well what about the other 12 sets of lights? How high do you want city taxes anyway. And saying this city is not going to attract anyone because IKEA interchange is not a freeway is pretty silly.

What needs to be done to make this city work. Over, or Underpasses for all of BISHOP, and take Bishop to where it belongs, not route 90, it was never suppose to connect like that. Go back to the original plan, it was also suppose to connect directly to #1 hwy in the east, and to Moray to the West, and then to Centerport. This would then be used for industrial and get people to and from one end of the city fast. Same goes for Cheif Peg, all though that is far off from being finished. And last but not least, full clover leafs on all sets of lights on the Perimeter HWY. And over or underpasses at the few tracks it crosses. That is what makes commerce move, not IKEA junk. Ikea is just as happy the way things are, the only people upset are Whyte Ridge etc.

Now I expect all those transit bus lovers to defend me this time since you all bashed me last time lol

I assume most everyone here is very conflicted. They know deep down what the right type of development is, but like most people who would end up at a site like this want to see (in a little corner of their mind):
  • Huge Skyscrapers
  • Speedy Freeways with four level stack interchanges
  • Winnipeg grow immensely in area

Stuff like that, things you'd do with your city in SimCity. So, while people advocate for transit and pedestrian oriented environments, when the topic of (for instance) freeways comes up they fantasize a bit about how to make the perimeter and inner ring road free flowing.

Having said that, I see things like this: While I think high density in the core and public transit oriented development is what we should be doing and encouraging (while discouraging the opposite), we still could greatly use a good road network that is both very safe for individuals and very efficient for goods transport (trucking and such). That's why even though I see other more important priorities, I never see it a completely bad thing to be completing the ring road and removing at grade intersections on it or the Perimeter.

But the problem is that the Mayor made the promise that he would improve traffic flow in the area as a part of the purchase. I believe it was stated in the sale of the parcel because the developers were worried about it?

I believe the developers are going to be Shindico too, so that adds a bit to the picture (if not for the old stadium site, they are the developer for the old arena site).

Healthy addition to downtown
Medical clinic, druggist to open in the Exchange
By: Murray McNeill
Posted: 1:00 AM

Another key service is about to be added to the downtown's Exchange District.
Two partners -- a pharmacist and a family physician -- have leased the main floor of the Maltese Cross Building at the corner of King Street and McDermot Avenue with the intention of opening a new walk-in clinic/pharmacy early in the new year.
"We're aiming for January," pharmacist Ryan Chan said, adding interior renovations are already well underway.
"Its going to be very rustic/contemporary. Lots of wood and stone."
Although there's just the two of them at the moment, Chan said a number of other health-care professionals are interested in joining the clinic. Hopefully, some or all of them will be on board by the time the clinic opens.

I heard a rumour over the weekend about the gravel lot to the north of 201 Portage (TD Centre) is getting closer to getting a new tower built. Cross our fingers.

Don't tease us, Biff! If you're right about this, then may a thousand blessings be bestowed upon you by the god(s) and/or celebrities and/or pornographic entertainers of your choice. But if this turns out to be just a rumour, then I hope whoever told it to you promptly gets crushed by a falling piano.

You're pretty silly to think that we're saying if you put an interchange, god will come! It's one of the bigger issues along Kenaston. Not for people going to IKEA, but the people not going there (ie: 99% of traffic on Kenaston). Obviously Bishop Grandin, Chief, Perimeter, etc. Not sure if you're ignorant or just don't know! But most of what you speak of is still the plan.

is there just room for one tower on that site? interesting to see what will be built, I'm guessing it will be mixed use. I always imagined a shorter office tower with a taller residential and hotel tower on that site.

I think that they're going to retain the existing structure (which would function as part of a flyover for eastbound-to-northbound traffic. That crosses Hwy 59, so yes, the 2nd structure required would be a fly-over over the hwy 101 lanes, which themselves will be elevated over 59. Now that the long waits for the NHL and IKEA, maybe this project will go ahead too.
