Minto has sold half of their condos for this project (Not sure if they are firm or still conditional) but certainly impressive # in this slower climate.

I can just picture the 'Friends' of Lansdowne meeting in Bridgehead and sipping on organic loose leaf tea between malcontent mutterings over the travesty ensuing down the way. 'How dare they build in the Glebe without miring the bidding process in decades of environmental studies, red tape, competing developers and community protest!' 'How dare they just go ahead and BUILD after only three appeals! This isn't the Ottawa we've worked so hard to quell development in and save from the evil effects of CHANGE!'

What a great looking construction site! It's like a blank canvas. Let's hope they do this one right. The designs look good, but it will be up to materials and little details to make this really work. I hope they serve booze at that new movie theatre
I can't wait to see the finished product. From the Sun today: http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/11/25/otta...4-perfect-fits-for-gm-including-2-in-nfl

Those North side stands REALLY need some work.

What's that big tunnel near the Civic centre (on the right of top picture, roughly centred in second)?

It looks like a pedestrian tunnel to underground parking, but it looks like it might have been built in 67 along with the Civic.

When does it usually snow in the Ottawa region? For that matter does the snow ever stay for the entire winter or do you usually get a freeze thaw type of winter.
Here on the prairies we usually have to stop road construction by the end of October because the dirt is frozen solid to a depth of 6ft.

Seems these days the snow starts up about mid-December, but it wasn't always like that. I believe our frost line doesn't extend past 4 feet here.

That was a second loading door/ramp for the civic center. It was always there. Actually a friend is a former police office once told me that they used that ramp to get a visit hockey team's bus (and players on it) out of the civic centre one night after a really bad melee. Basically brought the bus up the ramp with tons of cops guarding it and and holding back the crowd so the bus could get a non-stop run up to the Queensway and the heck out of town.

Winters aren't what they used to be, but snow definitely stays all winter - usually sometime in December through mid-March.

I do not know what the construction crews can and can not do in winter conditions, which I guess VANRIDERFAN is asking in his post a couple above this one.
But for VRF and others , here is a reminder of what the current timelines are.

November 2012
•Horticulture Building is moved 120 metres east
•Construction on stadium begins
•Excavation and construction of the parking garage begins

Spring 2013
•Construction commences on mixed-use buildings
•Construction commences on urban park

Spring 2014
•Stadium complete
•Completion of parking garage

Fall/Winter 2014
•Mixed-use substantial completion

Summer 2015
•Urban park and remainder of project complete

It is the loading ramp for the Civic Centre built in 1967 that kind of fell in disuse in the later years. Some guys used to park at the bottom.

Here's a picture taken a few years ago:

...trimmed....
Can't hot pave asphalt in the winter once the bitumen plants close (usually late Dec, Early Jan till May 15th ish) you can only cold patch.
Otherwise we can do everything else - It just costs more because we have to insulate/heat/thaw depending on the job and run material on half loads in the spring.
