I had Vancouver and Miami in mind when I saw the rendering too. I really don't mind it so long as it doesn't get to the point where there are another 20 that look just like it. That's why I like both Vancouver and Miami skylines, but I can't bring myself to love them. Panama City has this cookie cutter skyscraper syndrome too.

This was the point I was trying to make a few pages back. But 888 Olive is a very nice and modern tower that'll hopefully be an opening for new development around that area because that side of downtown has seen nothing new in terms of ground up projects.

I think 888 Olive looks like a tower you would see on the Upper Eastside, something you would imagine alot of celebs buying a unit in. Its just a matter of time, I’ve always said that one of the biggest advantages that DTLA has over other downtowns is close proximity to HOLLYWOOD! Like it or not, When you start seeing more celebs & industry types buying units in DTLA that will be when it has fully arrived because then it becomes ingrained in pop culture & trendy circles as well as to the avg Joe, that “Its cool & hip to have a rental or condo in DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES!” I'm looking forward to more development of this caliber as we turn a new page in DTLA design hopefully we will get many of the cutting edge designs that others have posted here in the past & less of the squatty, uninspired types that we are use to seeing. Not to say that they don't have their place in the city but we Definitely need more balance.

Industry types have been living in downtown for years so hearing that a celeb has property isn't really surprising. I remember Johnny Depp bought a penthouse unit at Eastern Columbia, David Beckham and his hot cyborg Victoria bought a unit way out in the Biscuit Company Lofts, Lauryn Hill had a loft at the Molino Lofts in the Arts District, back when he was a Clipper, Elton Brand had a unit in Luma and I remember reading someplace that Kobe Bryant bought a unit in the Ritz.

People across the board are looking hard at DTLA right now and I'm really excited to see where this ride takes us next.

They certainly are. Out of all the boom-era downtown 'rebirths', I would say that ours has been the most successful.

I wouldn't say most successful but much more evident than the last boom of 2004-2009. Everyone sees it and you can literally feel it in the air that DTLA is changing for the better and what's really scary is that we have yet to truly scratch the surface of what DTLA could become.

One Santa Fe is also under construction.

Barry Shy's planned 40 floor tower at 6th and Main is worth mentioning, since he's shooting for an April groundbreaking. Although from what I've read, the plan needs revisions and may have to face a review process.

You forgot the Broad museum. And isn't the planned residence next to the Broad museum going to have a groundbreaking very soon?

That's the Related Tower

Could be similar to the south park boom with the sea of cranes again if 8th and Grand along with 888 Olive begin. The crane for 8th and Hope is bound to go up soon.

I inquired about it the other day but the Chinatown Gateway project is also under construction.

Good list-- thank you for putting this together. It would also be interesting to see how many total residential units this is and then estimate (given an assumed number of people per unit) how many new people will be able to live downtown via all the development currently under construction or scheduled to begin in the near-term.

I'm looking for the article, but I think it was the person who owns the Chester Williams building also owns that parking lot on Spring between 5th and 6th (next to Spring Arcade) and he was going to build a mixed-user there. IIRC, he is hoping to start construction some time next year.

Edit: Found the story on downtown news: http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/devel...19848b0-f217-11e1-8f71-001a4bcf887a.html

I live near the Hotel Clark and every once in a while I'll walk by and the garage door will be open and you can see workers in there. Nothing's been done to the exterior at all, but a commenter on Brigham Yen's site said that the rooms were done, so who knows. But I kinda doubt since there are different window treatments. They are moving at a snail's pace and it all feels kinda of shady. One night I was walking my dog and what looked like a small limo was parked inside and a guy who looked like a hip hop star replete with lady friends was standing there.

LASF do you not consider city west a downtown neighborhood? I'd also include the Lorenzo although not technically downtown.

Don't forget 1027 Wilshire under construction in City West. That project includes 376 apartments.

Edit: I mean 1111 Wilshire is under construction and is 210 units. I don't think 1027 Wilshire has started construction.

I couldn't agree with this more. What has happened in downtown over the last 15-20 years is by no means small. I think that the minds of Angelino's are changing, and if you wonder what the minds of Angelino's can do look at any part of Los Angeles today, and more likely than not it just didn't exist 100 years ago. That's a giant testament of what it means to be Angelino. And here we are slowly moving toward transit, and downtown. If the engineering marvel of our freeway system and the live large of our suburbs are any indication of what's to come for public transit and urban living... the flood gates are still just trickling. Downtown and public transit today are what the suburbs and freeways were in 1912. But sadly, our city is so young, I'd really be going back to the 1950's or 60's.
