Well, they can always put exit numbers on intersections and pretend its a freeway, like what they did with Highway 17 and 19 on Vancouver Island...

"Project managers say the groundwork is being laid to eventually upgrade those intersections to free flowing interchanges with on and off ramps."

Better than nothing, at least they are confirming the need.

One thing that I noticed test driving the new Hwy 17 from Hwy 1 down the hill was the pavement. Very course. Confirmed today that the new asphalt pavement is "quiet" pavement. In other words, the asphalt is course (with minimal sand mixed into same) in order to provide air pockets to provide the lower decibel level.

Can't say that I'm much of a fan.

I believe the same stuff is on Nordel Hill, or maybe that's pervious? I feel like you might actually get better grip as a side-effect.

I quite like it. They used it on the Sea to Sky around Lions Bay. It's noticably quieter in car and doesn't pool water on the surface.

Yeah the asphalt on the Sea-To-Sky is great with handling water: I'm surprised more roads aren't built with this though I would imagine there's a cost involved.

The major cost is to the durability of the surface. 5 year product life instead of 10 apparently.

First Avenue once had 'quiet pavement'.

I believe the trade name for this stuff is something along the lines of Superpave or Ultrapave.

It's called Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC). Superpave has lots of fines that makes the pavement smooth whereas OGFC has no fines which makes water go right through it and reduces noise.

Drove the highway this morning, very nice. It's a 30 construction zone between the park and past 138 St.

Word of caution to those who want to drive this road and have a bit of the lead foot, there were speed traps in both directions.

Also drove the new SFPR (Hwy 17) section today. Was unfamilar terrain and the traffic was very, very sparse. The western end will be a bit of a gong show for people not familiar with the industrial area. Frankly, I can't see much traffic on this route until the section to the AFB opens up.

And did a comfortable 110 km/hr cruising speed along the 9 km section in a few minutes. No Queens Cowboys in sight. The median is only ~ 1/2 lane width. Would have preferred at least 2/3 lane width which is common along Hwy 15 and 10. But still a nice, new drive.

Just drove it too with my wife, what a fantastic highway. Living in Surrey, it felt like we were somewhere way out towards the Valley, so rural, so quiet, so nice. Barely any traffic on it, although I kept to about 90 km/h due to hearing reports of the cops on there doing radar, didn't see anything though.

The western part is messy, but it will do its job for now - I think they hope to have the Bridgeview intersection opened up sometime by March/April next year.

Hmm, sounds good for a test drive when I'm in for Christmas. I guess I'm looking forward much more to trying out the entire SFPR... sorry Hwy 17 when it is all complete next year.

I'm also curious to see how the morning rush hour goes in Burnaby-Vancouver on monday I'm thinking that the Grandview - Cassiar section will be the roughest part of Hwy 1 until its fully completed, simply because its still a pinch point 4-lane, reduced speed section.

The durability is not so much of an issue if an appropriate asphalt binder is used.

Some added costs for this product stem from the modified asphalt bitumen required to reduce abrasion loss, lime (As an anti-stripping additive) and, the actual placement method which differs slightly from more traditional hot mixes.

Lastly, no structural value is given to this asphalt layer when designing the road as the presence of air voids make it difficult to both quantify and justify. The entire purpose of this layer is to reduce traffic noise, nothing else.

makr3trkr - You are correct that this product was used on Nordel Hill however, the mix design is significantly different than that of the SFPR.

Keen eyes will notice the difference in OGFC structure near the FHB. Different projects, different mix designs.
