I know this post should probably be in the Classic Salt Lake City Thread, but since we brought up the Hotel Newhouse and there isn't much news lately, I thought I'ld post this. See if you can guess the names of the buildings and their locations.

"This structure, designed by Richard Kletting as the centerpiece of an amusement park on 900 South between State and Main streets, was constructed in 1899 and derived its name from the fact that the wood structure was covered with salt crystals. The Palace served as an exhibition hall, theater, and dance hall, and was lit up at night by some 900 electric lights." It burned down in 1910. The only thing that remains is its name.

"The Liberty Theater, March 15, 1912. This photograph was taken for the Nephi Plaster Company and shows an elaborately decorated faςade. Miss Liberty was eventually removed from the building and the theater was renamed the Gem. This site at 160 South State is now a parking lot for a fast food restaurant"

This building is where the infamous Shilo Inn now stands. This building was designed by
the best architect in the nation at that time, Louis Sullivan (Frank Loyd Wright's mentor).

I saw Return of The Jedi here in 1983 when State Street was flooded over.

This is where the One Utah Center tower now stands.

Now just imagine of those buildings on Main had remained, JC Penney, Woolworths etc, (the last picture) and the towers had been built possibly on 200 S or 300 S, off of main, that could be a really cool club/bar/restaurant/boutique shops and upper floor residential. Would be a really fantastic center of activity in downtown, with the sky scrapers on each side.

I know, that is also what is happening with the PAC, luckily the Tribune building and sandstone brownstone aren't part of the demolition.

We have lost some true gems,

but some are still around, just hidden. Dinwoody, Zims (Pebbles and Twigs) Lets hope a developer with some vision can transform those back to their original glory.

Imagine what a cool little corner of downtown the Dinwoody, Bennett, and Arrowpress, the building in front of arrowpress and mix in something new on the corner where the very nondescript red brick one story building is, this could make if all developed appropriately. The SLC narrows concept that was brought up on the forum a very long time ago.

I've been thinking about the block east of Gateway where the new hotels will be built and this is something I came up with to help finish out the block and hopefully add some vibrancy.

...and a second version with a few tweaks and additions.

SALT LAKE CITY — It has been quite a year for the retail scene in Utah with so many big brand stores that have set up shop for the first time in the Beehive state.

Some of the new store openings included H&M, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, and now the first Trader Joe's is being added to that list.

"I am so happy to be here," said Trader Joe's Captain, Rory Violette. "We had 200 or 300 hundred people waiting outside our store this morning. We gave them all high fives and put leis around their neck, and we just couldn't be happier."

You guys may be interested to know that the Tower Theatre's facade is largely intact under the current cladding, and the Film Society is raising money to restore it.

Good to know Scott, the sooner the better. Also, I was wondering if the old Paris facade is still intact underneath the current front.

I wish someone would get goin on the Dinwoody and old Zims.

It's a shame that we lost a genuine Sullivan, only to be replaced by the Shilo.

Where was that theater located? And the Salt Palace Theater..is that the original and where was it? Two beautiful buildings that really leaves in pit in my stomach to think we had them...and lost them. When I stand across the street from the Beehive house, and look at that plaque of the building that stood there where now the tall office building does, well, I know progress is good, but it's a shame they couldn't just move the old building somewhere versus tearing it down.

Love your concepts DM, I don't think the majority of the things added in the 2nd one are feasible however, particularly the 400 West mixed use midrise, don't get me wrong though I think everything else is feasible. The midrise is on the site of a Rocky Mtn Power Substation. I would love to see the rest come to light thought. Being adjacent to ESA would be a great place to have the block split into four.

As Future Mayor, I approve this concept.

^^^ Yeah that substation is in a horrible spot. That's why I didn't put anything on it in the first one... but I figured, you never know in 20-30 years so I put something there.

Salt Lake City is one of just six U.S. cities among 56 metropolitan economies across the world that rank as "pockets of growth," outperforming their home countries in the expansion of gross domestic product per capita and employment, the Brookings Institution said Friday...

...The other five cities cited as pockets of growth were Boston, Detroit, San Jose, Seattle and Worcester, Mass.

Half of the fastest-growing metropolitan economies were in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, while the slowest-growing metros were in Western Europe and North America, according to the study.

Believe it or not! This building still exists, but has been covered up as some unrecognizaable commerical building. It currently houses the Salt Lake Costume Company on 1100 East and 1700 South.

This building has been demolished. It existed on the southwest corner of Main Street and 300 south.

This hotel existed across the street from Union Pacific Depot. It would have still standed on the north east corner of 400 West and 100 south. I believe that is currently a parking lot for the Triad Center.

This was a bath house on about 900 north and 300 west. It now is The Children's Museum of Utah.

This was Richards Street which bisected the Crossroads plaza block until the mall was developed in the 70's.

This is Pierpont Avenue between 200 west and West Temple looking eastward. Many of those buildings on the norht side of the street still exist. I used to work in one of them. Cafe Pierpont and the other restaurant were in the others.

This building once stood where the Century Cinemas now exists on 3300 south and State Street. It was demolished in 1956 for an insurance office.

I Think I would rather have that back then what we have now with City Creek Center. I love City Creek, don't get me wrong but all I can say is, what the hell were they thinking back in the 70's?

Regarding the Paris Millinery, "this building was later refaced with a more stream-lined faςade, and eventually demolished".
