Oh oh. What is that vacant lot doing on 7th? What was torn down?

That can't be 7th......does the sidewalk cafe loop around the corner of the bldg?

Yes- the patio is actually on the grand avenue side. The lot you see in this picture is where the Angelina project is supposed to be.

^That's Grand Avenue in the picture. 7th street would be behind whoever took the picture.

The huge parking lot is the 8th and Grand site.

Edit: Looks like Ziggy beat me to it!

  1. You are going from your loft in the Historic Core to Ralphs for some grocery shopping. Driving 1.5 miles seems lazy, but you don't want to carry 6 bags of groceries that distance either.
  2. You and your date are dining at Perch, with plans to catch a movie at Regal LA Live. Parking at LA Live is a ripoff and a chore, but gentlemen don't make their dates walk 2 miles either.
  3. You live in South Park and want to relax in Grand Park. Catching the Blue line at Pico, switching to the Red line at Metro Center, and getting off at Civic Center would work, but it requires a transfer. Hopping on the streetcar at your doorstep and hopping off a block from Grand Park sounds much better, and doesn't require a possible wait on the platform in Metro Center.
The thing is that a bus is just as good or even better than a streetcar in each of those scenarios. In fact there are very few scenarios where a streetcar - especially a one way streetcar - would be better than a bus. Streetcars and trains are better for novice transit users primarily because they are easier to figure out and also because of the illusion that they transport a better class of rider.

But the reality is that for experienced riders buses are better in many ways and that's why they replaced streetcars 50 years ago. The biggest way in which they are better is that buses can detour around problems. A car hitting a streetcar will shut down the entire line maybe for hours, but a car and bus accident is only problematic for the bus involved and other buses continue to run. The blue line sometimes gets shut down for events that don't even involve the train. Like car accidents next to the tracks. Emergency responders will need to work either next to or on the tracks so they shut the blue line (one or both tracks) down. Or house fires have shut the line down. Or general police activity. Buses can detour around all of these events.

I can't argue with anything you said, but you're ignoring the whole economic development angle.

"This bus line has spurred so much economic growth!" ...said no person, ever.

In addition to the development potential that streetcars encourage, here are some other benefits:

1) They are able to be powered with 100% renewable energy (most of LA's buses are natural gas but electricity is often cleaner).
2) Streetcars don't have the stigma that buses have, helping to attract more discretionary transit riders would would otherwise drive.
3) Streetcars can carry 2-3 times as many passengers as buses.
4) The useful life of streetcars is far longer (30-40 years for streetcars vs. 12-15 years for buses).

My experience of LA in general is that it works too hard to be unique.............that it needs to be at the cutting edge on everything. I think that's why there are so many design fails......From my experience, people feel more comfortable with bldgs that are not isolated monuments. I am looking at you Bunker Hill.

alki, it's not that I disagree with the specifics of such comments, but it's that they rank way down the list of what most ppl think is wrong with dtla. My sense is that the average, typical person doesn't have a hard time warming up to dt cuz of the things you cite, or what many forumers here often point out. I'd say far more ppl are underwhelmed by, as one example, noticing things like what you mentioned about, that being the big parking lot on grand ave across from the new coco laurent.

I have a hunch that even the lonely, isolated nature of bunker hill makes fewer ppl go than what I've noticed mentioned by so many ppl....on blogs, in articles, what ppl have told me through the yrs....time & time again. things like dirty sidewalks &, most definitely, homeless ppl or aggressive panhandlers. Or, as I noted in my visit to the hood a few months ago with a friend from nocal, the general shabbiness of the hood.

iow, we should be so lucky if the short height of bldgs, or a lack of stores on the 1st floor, or exteriors covered in stucco instead of granite, or too much space built for cars, or windswept plazas.... or pink benches in the new civic ctr pk .....were the biggest problems throughout most of dt.

as for the new restaurant across from bottega louie, it will be interesting how bottega is going to view the new kid on the block. Or what other existing restaurants around there are noticing in terms of growing competition & customers having more distractions & more places to pick & choose from.

The restaurant appears to have had some preview events already. And just as you're not sure how the outdoor dining area is arranged in relation to the bldg, I also need another pic beyond the one below & the one from muji that gives a better sense of whether it wraps around the corner or not. It's interesting that they apparently built a podium above the level of the sidewalk for that outdoor area to sit on. My only nitpick is I wish they had included planters around the perimeter, since that tends to create a more soothing, green earth feeling for diners.

No problem, and I'm from out of town as well. But I've been taking the Metrolink into downtown.

Ava Little Toyko from earlier today. The piling rig on the left side has been busy: the piles for the Los Angeles Street side are completely done, the 2nd St. side are 3/4 done, and the side opposite 2nd St. look to be more than halfway done. They should start some serious digging (which has already started in a really weird pattern) by the middle or end of next week.

I'm not sure if this is a new project or not but it does warrant posting. A very nice looking infill project for City West (Bixel and Lucas).

Wow, this is a huge project. Trying to wrap my head around exactly what the plan will look like, as Bixel and Lucas are parallel and don't intersect. The project must stretch a full block from Bixel to Lucas, but I'm not sure at which cross street.

EDIT: Figured it out by actually reading the description

"648 rental apartments include the adaptive re-use of an existing nine-story medical office building."

So this will be along the southern side of 6th street from Bixel to Lucas, including the medical office building at 1136 6th St. Awesomesauce! That stretch of 6th can feel a bit forlorn and shady. A huge mixed-use project will add a ton more pedestrians and "eyes on the street" - exactly what is needed.

wow, city west is heating up again. with Astani's huge project starting next year, this new project along with the other already under construction projects, its almost a mini boom over there.

Also, i know most people arent a fan of the 6 story buildings, but i think that 6 - 12 stories is good for city west as long as there is street retail and no setbacks. it could be a very dense area

Oh my god, this might be the busiest building I have ever seen. There must be at least six different pattern/color combinations at work here. Blegh.
