The Quebec department store institution La Maison Simons is betting big on its first store outside of the province – in the West Edmonton Mall – sparing little expense as it begins its Canadian expansion and takes on a wave of foreign retailers.
Simons, which will open the Edmonton store on Wednesday, is pouring $40-million to $50-million into the outlet’s development, double its usual budget, including a soon-to-be installed suspended canopy of crystalline columns in a glass cube by Canadian architect Philip Beesley. In the young women’s section, at the press of a button, cone shapes descend from the ceiling to form fitting rooms.

Mr. Simons is making small adjustments for his Edmonton store. It will carry about 10 to 18 per cent more large and extra-large sizes, and that amount fewer small and extra small sizes, after his research found those differences between the Edmonton and Quebec markets.

They're located just two blocks away from each other here. They'll retain both banners, but for how long?

I'll do you one better: They're right across the road from each other in London. The Leon's store is about a decade old, and The Brick just moved into that location less than five years ago, right next to Bad Boy.

There are Future Shops and Best Buys beside each other, at least here in Ottawa (right beside each other in Nepean). Marshalls and Winners are also pretty close (Trainyards & St-Laurent). I don't think there will be a problem.

Also, about Calgary having more L and XL sizes, it could be that they tend to wear things bigger (not that they are, in fact, bigger). I have noticed that Quebec men do like to wear their clothes tight and short.

Size large does not necessarily mean that someone is overweight. A man over 6ft usually needs at least a large. I would say 6'0" is the upper limit for medium (for someone who likes a tighter fit).

Regarding obesity, Quebec is pretty comparable with Ontario, and is doing slightly less well than BC. http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/82-620-...053576-eng.htm For women, Quebec and Alberta are the same, although there is a gap among men.

Not everyone makes large and small the same way either. All my pants are size 38 but some fit better than others. I have some large shirts that are smaller than my medium shirts.

joe fresh like H&M sizes are very small i find their XL is very small for me, where as gap, banana republic XL is usually just right

This seems to have been the first year that a large number of stores in St. John's had Black Friday sales, have other cities had Black Friday sales for years or is it new?

yeah canada has jumped on the bandwagon for it - there's nothing mindblowing sales wise - just hype - if you really need a $5 copy of a 15 year old movie on DVD... who buys DVD's anymore anyway

I noticed that as well.

And the radio kept saying things like, "Black Friday, BIGGER than Boxing Day!", etc.

It REALLY turned me off. I made a conscious decision to buy fuck all yesterday. This is Newfoundland, and, technically, Canada. It's not America.

Is there any reason why Canada can't do "Black Tuesday" after your Thanksgiving? October is not too early to start shopping, and if I'm a retailer in Canada, I look seriously into Black Tuesday promotions next year.

Most people in the country object to the idea of starting the Christmas frenzy before Remembrance Day (November 11th).

Boxing Day is our Black Friday. Always has been. And Sponge is correct about our mentality toward Christmas things before Remembrance Day. October is all about Hallowe'en, so it is too early for Christmas stuff, and the first 11 days of November are solemn. November 12th might work but that is both fairly close to Black Friday and too soon after Remembrance Day. It also chances which day of the week it is on so what would we call it?

They talked about it on the local news and interviewed people who said they prefer having the sales before Christmas then on Boxing Day.

It's as far from the US as any populated part of Canada is, so cross-border shopping is no issue from Newfoundland (unless St. Pierre and Miquelon ever manages to compete).

Oh, it's not about cross-border shopping. It's local stores having Black Friday sales and advertising it as the new, better Boxing Day. I couldn't care less what actually happens south of the border - they can do what they like, and I'd gladly participate if it was closer - but I don't want us to adopt it here.

It may not be there, but for many other places that have to openly compete with US retailers that lie less than 2 hours away (sometimes less than 30 minutes away), it is the main reason. They realized, especially in 2009 and 2010, that they were watching more business spill across the border than ever before, on any day of the year.

Of Canada's 20 largest metropolitan areas, 11 of them - in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec - lie within a 2-hour drive of major US shopping opportunities and saw their business slip away like never before.

I understand. And so you guys started the Black Friday thing long ago and now it's probably just coming here because it's already everywhere else on the mainland?
