I think the closest would be my current home . . . Washington, DC. It might surprise you, but even with the downturn in US housing, DC is still flush with new projects across the city - housing, retail, business and public space development or enhancements. There are even a few Vancouverism touches here and there, some of the buildings (but not all) and some of the renovated public spaces. The Arena Stage, a well-respected local performing arts center, in fact used Bing Thom to design their enlarged performance complex.

DC has some of the strictest height restrictions in the world, but as much as critics complain of how boring the architecture is, it also has some of the most livable neighborhoods and walkable (and bikeable - thanks to wide streets in the original city plan) streets of any city in the world.
If anyone ever comes, do yourself a favor and venture from the monument and national mall corridor and check out some of the vibrant villages dotting the city. You'll be surprised.
A decent local blog of projects in DC, as well as the Maryland and Virginia suburbs -
