The first address that comes to mind is 7207 Hampton Avenue in West Hollywood. It is where Poinsettia meets Hampton

If you look at google maps, that complex has been designated as having historic significance. Unfortunately, the historic designation sign is practically worthless since it does not explain why the building is important. Perhaps one of you Noir-vets can post a link by which one can follow-up when confronted with an historic designation sign. Again, the tan sign is clearly visible. Unfortunately, the foliage completely obscures the complex as I remember it.

The Gilmore Adobe is there too. Lower left corner in both photos.

Built by Antonio Jose Rocha in 1828-31, the adobe was later sold to Arthur Gilmore who ran a dairy farm on the surrounding property. Arthur's son, Earl B. Gilmore was born there in 1886. Even though the Gilmores eventually became very wealthy due to the oil found on the property and the development of the land, Earl B. Gilmore continued to live in his childhood home. He died there, in the room where he was born, in 1964.

It took me quite awhile to located this photograph of the California Hotel.

I don't believe I've ever seen a photograph of it before. I would have remembered the amazing rooftop sign in the shape of an oil derrick.
I wonder how the light on top lit up? -blinking red perhaps -or a steady warm yellowish glow -or rotating, like the beacon on City Hall.

That's the SW corner of N Brand Blvd at E Lexington. There's a Bank of America branch there now. Too bad, I really like the combination of theater & hotel and it was a great sign. (It says "California" at least nine times on the building altogether.) Musta been taken in 1952, "Come Back Little Sheba" is playing. The much smaller hotel next door at 339 N Brand is still in business and looks prosperous.

This is such a great find Chuckaluck! It's truly remarkable.

If you remember, we discussed this mysterious apartment complex earlier in the thread. I don't believe we ever came up with a good photograph of the place.

Below: A large portion of Normandy Towers is quite a distance from the street. The property looks to be in the shape of a L (lying down) with the west portion (left in the photo) continuing behind the private home.

With a hotel, movie theater, and bar all in one building, it looks like people were living it up at the Hotel California (sorry, couldn't resist. But c'mon....you know SOMEONE would eventually say it!) But I'm curious, what is that all-glass structure on top of the hotel? It's too industrial to be an odd hotel amenity like a rooftop garden. Is it covering building mechanicals such as heating units, etc.? Maybe, but why all glass? And why in such a prominent location on the face of the building? Any ideas? Or am I missing something really obvious?

(BTW....an early wish that you all have a very happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones. What am I thankful for? I'm thankful that we can all gather here to discuss and explore a beautiful city's history at a time when countless others around the world are simply struggling to survive another day. How blessed are we?)

That said, the atrium skylight is quite nice. The L.A. Chamber of Commerce moved around so much
I can't remember which building this would be.

Three views of the Chapman Park I hadn't seen before...perhaps because the source identifies them thusly: "Chapman Park Hotel, 5th & Spring Streets, Los Angeles. Formerly named the Alexandria Hotel, it was built in 1906 and enlarged in 1909."

The third shot appears to have been taken toward the Gaylord before the hotel added its Pueblo bungalow addition in the mid-'30s, seen in the first two shots.

Yes, e_r, the original 40-room Hollywood Hotel was built in 1902 at the NW corner of Hollywood and Highland. (See first photo below). It was so successful that a huge addition, which included a new entrance, chapel, ballroom, etc and 125 guest rooms, was constructed running along Hollywood Blvd, stretching west to Orchid Dr (second photo below). It opened in 1905. The whole place, including the gardens, took up three acres. They did a nice job of matching the architecture by repeating the "mission" arches twice more on the addition's facade.

In the wonderful photo you posted one can just see the round turret of the original structure on the right. The old hotel starts immediately to the right of the new entrance porch.

In the later Du-par's images there appears a high rise located at 5670 Wilshire which used to be called the California Federal Plaza Building. I have a vague recollection that in 1966 or 67 the building and its sculpture (eclipsed by the light standard in the Du-par photos) were featured in a Sonny & Cher movie (Good Times?). Bound to have several shots of the surrounding Miracle Mile.

Has anyone heard the latest on CMI Group's partial demo of the Pickford Fairbanks/United Artists/Sam Goldwyn/Warner's Hollywood/the Lot Studios on Santa Monica at Formosa? All I've seen recently is a pic of the start of the demo of the Pickford Building (below).

There was a flurry of articles when the project was announced at the end of March, but since then not much. The Fairbanks Building, the Writer's Building, the Editorial Building and the offices that front Santa Monica Blvd were all also slated for demolition.

On the left in the undated but early photo of the studio (above) one can see the vertical neon sign for the 1925 Red Post Cafe which would later become Jack's Steakhouse and finally the Formosa Cafe in 1939. Looks like the roof of the east tower of the studio isn't quite finished.

Regarding the glass structure on roof of the California Hotel, Glendale. I believe that is a structure for the flies, storage space for scenery, lighting and the motion picture screen; assuming the theater had a proper theatrical stage. Just my guess.
