I wish there were more brick buildings (with no ugly spandrel) in Vancouver.

I love the bricks used in this building in London's Kings Cross redevelopment:

Beautiful stuff, Hed. The cladding and building design both. Wish had more of that in Vancouver

How the heck can those windows be watertight against wind blown rain?
(maybe the palm trees are an indication that rain is "never" a factor?)

I might expect a parkade behind those windows, but the shape of the floorplate discounts that theory.

I can't see a moisture sensitive environment (like residnetial or office space) behind there.

It looks very neat but not even remotely feasible in a climate like Vancouver.

Not at all feasible in our cold rainy climate the way it is, no. Something very similar in design (talking of the entire building) and of course with adapted weatherproofing would go well here, I think.

Marine drive in North Vancouver has a pretty significant brick theme going with its new condos (scroll through the first half of photos).

Not sure how smart it is in an earthquake zone though.

couldn't agree with you more. i love the brick buildings. they have quite a few of them in NY and Boston. love the ol' style kinda buildings. we need a little more of that, mixed in with glass stuff. van needs a lot more variety when it comes to their designs.

I recall a discussion from a couple of years ago in this very thread that indicated that that type of variety comes with time. Vancouver is still a very young city. Give it 30-50 years and we will have some of that very same variety. We will never catch up, but it will start to build.

That tower in China has just too much glass for my taste. The whole building is coated with glass.

Looks like someone put the model in the freezer, then dropped it in a sink of boiling water, then took it out and smiled at it, using it for the model.
