we don't have the natural resources of other provinces or house major financial institutions, we need to find our niche, and becoming a research and development hub could be it. it takes a lot of subsidizing but would be so beneficial in the future. It would also help continue to diversify our economy which is healthier then having specialized economies.

Every city is becoming a research and development hub. You have to figure out what you're good at. Thunder Bay's research sector is a world leader in forensics and cancer detection.

It does involve a lot of government investment, but the presence of those jobs makes the areas around them more desirable and that helps spur private economic growth. The people working those jobs also make nice salaries, so they have money to spend in the local economy. It has a ripple effect. I try to think of it more as the government indirectly giving us tax dollars back by fostering growth in the economy.

No one is arguing that those jobs aren't a good thing. But, they are no comparison to the types of jobs that IMRIS had. Those are the people able to buy the $400k condos that you don't think anyone could afford.

When did the Safeway in Osborne Village get a Tim Hortons??? I don't go to that one much, but I was in there a couple days ago and it blew my mind. Was that just because it made no sense to have two Starbucks in the same development, or is Tim Hortons moving in on the 'Safeway in-house coffee' racket? I guess Tim's is in the Village now.

Any updates on the Papa Georges site? Are we in for McDonalds?

I have a number of friends that are computer science grad students who worked there and are now most likely out of a job.

These kind of bleeding age careers just don't exist in our city.

It will take at least a generation or longer before we will see a similar high tech operation setup shop in our city limits.

Hopefully, this painful lesson in globalization has everyone, and especially those on Broadway, thinking about how we as a community cultivate and attract the best and brightest minds to snowy old Winterpeg.


One can only speculate at how much tax revenue is lost by having all of these well paid engineers and software types move to another locale.

Pretty sad indeed, can't believe our do-nothing provincial govt. couldn't come out swinging to entice IMRIS to stay. On the other hand lets see if the state of Minnesota offers IMRIS favourable loans and research grants that they so readily took here.

The Free Press article made it sound like (although I could be reaching) having the NRC around was the last thing keeping them here. Once the NRC was gone they had no reason to be here.

In the last month or so. Safeway has an agreement to put Tim's in its stores and I think this is the second one in Winnipeg, the first one was in their Canterbury Park store on Kildare a few years ago.

They have also been pulling out Starbucks out of the stores that were not performing. There have been a number of them in Winnipeg pulled and not replaced with anything.

great jobs for students, I agree. and a few careers are made for Mgr's,etc but majority is low wage jobs. Imris was a cutting edge medical equipment company that employed high wage folks. the kind of folks that drop $$$ at those stores mentioned above.

expansion to the 37-year-old facility.
