Nick's Service centre has closed up shop and moved out of Westboro Village. The site is just west of the LCBO. Another potential redevelopement site for the Village in the making. Hopefully any proposal will include geting rid of the adjacent motel to the south.

The Richmond Motel will never close. Ottawa Community Housing uses it as informal subsidized transitional housing. In other words, they subsidize its existence.

That is the new Honest Lawyer.

The old/current honest lawyer is owned by a developer...I believe Claridge, but my memory might be failing me.

Correct. The land sale was noted on SSP at some point.

The Honest Lawyer has become a ghost town most nights in the last few years. I'm surprised they have the money to invest in a new facility.

I had noticed many of the games and such at the place were starting to get a bit run down a few years ago. The "restaurantainment" thing was a cool concept for a bar. It's best years were several years back now. Hopefully a refresh will bring some life back to it. It was a fun place to hang out.

According to the November/December 2012 print edition of the Manor Park Chronicle, City Coucillor Peter Clark stated that an agreement has been reached between Minto Corp. and the owners of the mostly vacant fire-ravaged property on the corner of Beechwood Ave. and MacKay St. in New Edinburgh. Minto has confirmed it's intentions to acquire the site, and will present preliminary pre-consultation development plans to the City before the end of the year.

Also noted is that the Bread & Roses Bakery, who survived the fire and has been in a legal dispute with the landowners, will be moving to 323 St. Laurent Blvd early in the new year. As one of the last operating businesses at the fire site, this will pave the way for the demolition of the remaining diner and bakery buildings.

Can somebody please tell my how Ottawa Public Housing was able to turn 415 Maclaren St into an enormous sidescraper? It wasn't pretty before, but the red brick was tolerable and didn't really stand out. I think about 2 years ago they covered all the sides with this aweful white siding (which I thought was temporary) and it remains today. People moan and groan about buildings being out-of-place or designs not being up to par for their central location, but this monstrosity is huge (~25 stories) and in a very visible location less than a block from Bank. Sorry, I had to rant for a minute on this thing as it bothers me every day as I drive in to downtown. It amazes me the crap that can remain in Centretown including James Street Pub, Somerset House (what's left of it), Maclaren sidescraper, that weird empty lot at Bank and Florence, etc. Is there a way the city could force the owners of 415 Maclaren to fix up their VERY visible disgusting fascade?

ahhhh so i'm not crazy! i was sure that building magically changed colour from red to white, and I streetviewed it and tada! it was red in the streetview! i agree with you, it is a major scar on the skyline with the new bleached facade.

^It's a cheap and (sadly) legal fix for brick buildings that are in need of major work. Rather than repointing all that brick, the owners slap some metal siding over the old brick facade and danger of falling brick solved! It's going to become more of a problem as brick buildings from the 60s and 70s age and become unstable. Here in Toronto, the side of one such building "unzipped" and showered the sidewalk below with brick (on Yonge between Gerrard and College/Carlton). Without some form of intervention by the city, the metal siding solution will become increasingly prevalent.

hmmm I actually think that one looks better! what is the expected lifespan of all these old communist housing block style buildings from the 50's-70's in Ottawa anyhow?

With our luck, like 300 years! I bet they will last decades longer than any of the cheap glass condos going up in the city these days. I say cheap glass as the feds have actually built a few with pretty high quality materials and glazing recently. I suspect those buildings will stand the test of time a bit better.
