I agree with this as well. Even contemporary lighting like on The Roosevelt I would like to see on buildings in the Historic Core. I'd love to see not Vegas on Spring Street but a few buildings with interesting nighttime displays.

I wish they would light the Cupola above Vibiana Place. If you have ever visited Prague, they have an amazing skylight at night with all the steeples surrounding the city. Look how beautiful City Hall looks at night. The Union Lofts are also beautifully well lit..as well as of course, the Eastern Columbia.

Yep, I'm going to downtown today guys so a massive wall of pictures will be coming soon enough this evening. I'll be taking a look at the Courtyard Marriott, Wilshire Grand, 8th and Hope, Figat7th, The Broad, Grand Park, and probably a few of the buildings under renovation at Broadway(Which ones? Include addresses please )

Is I being naively optimistic if I say I hope the ground floor of the parking garage has some retail space? I know that's not that common, but if it had a spring street garage type of street level that would be cool.

Cool new rendering of 1130 S. Hope. I really like the design.

This rendering of the Hall of Justice doesn't make the parking structure look so bad; almost miniscule in comparison with the Hall of Justice itself.

Haha yeah the commentary is pure ignorance.

I'm not really sure about this artist in residence thing. It's a really cool idea, but I don't see this being financially feasible. I think the area would need to get very high end before something like that would work out. I hope I'm wrong though!

HunterK, I understand the old Payless Shoes at 9th and Broadway is a liquor/deli small market with produce. It sure beats the 7/11 that was trying to open in that spot.

No, I don't believe so... Do you see the interior pictures I posted? Looks like retail.

There is an organic deli type place (Om Nom) underneath Eastern if that is what you're thinking of. It's open now.

I walked around a bit today and grabbed a couple of shots with my phone. To whet your appetite for Mojeda's next update...

Ava Matsu (Little Tokyo Block 8) - from the corner of 2nd & Los Angeles. Dirt has been turned, and staking in for shoring piles.

Spring Street Park - humming along nicely. A lot visual progress, actually. Sorry for the shitty pano, but I was holding my phone inside the fence, and it wasn't the easiest thing to keep it steady.

And a bonus shot of the backside of the garage on 220 S. Spring St., from Main Street. I'm glad they're painting the backside.

All photos by me.

don't you recall colemonkee's pic from a few wks ago that showed the lot being closed down & surrounded with a green tarp? those are the best type of photos cuz they show totally new changes to the hood. I think such improvements are turning little tokyo into one of the most user friendly parts of dt, even more so when the new rail connector station is added at 1st & alameda sts.

as far as I know there perhaps is only one other new proj that may have broken ground over the past few wks....that being the large apt bldg that's supposed to rise next to the fwy and west of the water & power bldg, at fremont & temple sts. the proj from a devlpr who is everyone's favorite....GH palmer!

btw, you have to admit that ppl on this thread who go & about his devlpt....about his faux euro bldgs----as is done a few posts above----is no less of a.....

img.ezinearticles.com

....than any other complaint raised here.

btw, I bet far, far more ppl have problems not with new apt bldgs that have corny, vegasy euro styling.....certainly since those projs have filled up with tenants fairly quickly....but with the points I've raised in the past.

I think not understanding the difference between one & the other is a big reason some ppl become so puzzled why projs like the grand wilshire take so long to get off the ground...or end up cancelled....why new bldgs are short instead of big, tall towers, why major parts of bunker hill still are vacant even today. iow, no, it's not cuz new projs won't win the pritizker prize, or cuz bldgs don't have stores on the 1st level, or cuz new devlpt in dtla isn't urban enough.

"P.S. Still interested in what the hell is going on with Hotel Clark. But I guess I'm the only one."

You're not the only one, but nobody knows anything about what's going on with hotel clark because that's how its owners operate. Here's one article on them. http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/to-ha...deaf58e-168c-530c-8735-f8cb9a572d39.html

Thanks for some interesting information, I've always wondered who owned the Giannini Place while I worked out next door at LAAC. Let's hope they sell it off because the market does seem to be turning. Probably few more years.

Thanks for the pictures, Hunter.

When did the canopy over the subway portal at Pershing Square start going up? It's been a month or two since I last went through that station, and they hadn't started working on it then.

Has Metro finished the canopy over the portal in Grand Park?

Also, great perspective on the 8th and Hope site. From the Sheraton, I'm assuming?

I want to say they started the Pershing Square one sometime AROUND 6 weeks ago - don't hold me to it though. It has gone up pretty quick.

The canopy by Grand Park is getting pretty close to finished, not quite there yet, I'll post pictures when it is though.

Thanks, the iHope picture is from the top of that god awful Macy's parking garage.
