Fed up with wandering a downtown pedway with no clue how to find the nearest bookstore? Can't locate City Hall or the Shaw Conference Centre?

Worry no longer. There will soon be an app for that.

Downtown businesses say they need better signage and "wayfinding" for people heading into downtown, not just for tourists but also for residents coming in from the suburbs...

I have had the pleasure of being the community rep on this committee and am looking forward to seeing what the pilot project will finally look like. There has already been some strides forward in terms of coordinating hours of operation for the pedway network, but this will be much more of a comprehensive way-finding package for at, above and below grade.

^uh, read again... this is for a comprehensive way-finding/pedway package for ALL of the downtown core. Physical signage, digital apps, maps, digital terminals, advertising in some cases etc. etc.

$2mil for all of that is money well spent and sorely needed. One thing I found amazing about much of Japan was just how good the way-finding was. Signage and maps everywhere.

The new Calgary downtown wayfinding is clean and pretty good. Should look at it. I have no idea how it was funded.

^Calgary's was one of the case studies/models we used for reference/guidance. I agree it has been done very well and likely cost considerably more.

we're not talking a few street signs here. wayfinding includes maps and directories and painting and directories as well as signs. and even at that, you have to make some allowances for the sheer quantities involved. it's no different than saying you need $160,000 just for diffusers until you break it down to 50 per floor for 20 floors at $160 FOB the site and another $80 to install them.

i'm less concerned about the total cost if it's being spent on something of value that actually works once it's done without having to be "fixed" the day after because it isn't doing what it's supposed to (just like ordering and installing the wrong diffuser and then having to replace it because it was the wrong one for the job). if anyone has taken the recent survey on naming the city's new lrt lines, you'll know exactly what i mean about losing sight of the actual purpose in the execution.
