Thanks 1ajs! Also, saw Polo North today, it looks pretty damn nice!

Sadly, no pictures (Pink Floyd is a necessary must on my iPhone, and takes up a hefty 700mB)

1ajs does some photography around the city, particularly of heritage buildings, run-down buildings, etc etc. And he posts it here, for our enjoyment. Still though, I dont get the signifigance of the picture, or where it might've been taken. He'll probably tell us all!

The description of the photo on his Flickr page is "and so the pull starts".

I have no idea what idea he is trying to convey with this.

Looks like a cable reel on a trailer in the background.

This could be part of the new underground line that Manitoba Hydro is having built to connect the Rover Ave Terminal (Beside Disraeli fwy) to their brand new substation on Burrows @ Akins. This new substation is suppose to replace the two small ones at Alfired @ Akins and Charles @ Luxton.

hydros runing 3 high voltage lines from the rover st station. i think its runing to the new burrows st sub station

witch is part of a major inferstructure upgrade in the north end that hydros working on to move a high voltage line that runs through Michael Jaun park and a larger 5yr inferstructure plan

as for the old building in the background thats vulcan iron works and theres a company called merrit iron in it these days hopefully they wind up growing some more and take over the gem from 1873

The picture is on Sutherland (not Southerland) looking East at Maple Street

Here is a Google Street View
http://maps.google.com/?ll=49.906165,-97...uBqdexd5JzbKl6Gf56yoQ&cbp=11,105.07,,0,0

The barn-shaped building on the right looks like it has a new paint-job compared to the Google Street View (from 2009)

There will be more hydro underground work going in in the next few years in Winnipeg as Hydro builds new stations to replace their old ones or upgrades service.

One new one is going on William Ave by HSC to service that area as part of the HSC power upgrade.

According to something I read on the Hydro website the HSC has a lot of old obsolete transformers etc and Hydro wants to upgrade to a better distribution system for the HSC Campus.

It was projected to take loads off of the King St. station and Sherbrook Station. As far as I know this one has not yet been tendered.

They have also tendered for a new station at 555 Madison to relieve the station at St. James and Portage Ave. I think when this one comes online there will be upgrades to the other small stations in St. James.

There is also work being planned on the Martin Ave Station in Elmwood as it is at capacity and needs expansion. This work will be done as part of the conversion of the Rover Ave station to the new transmission lines from Pointe Du Bois in the next few years. This year some civil work was done to get the area ready for the change.

Looking at the Hydro Planning Document is seems like a lot of work is being done in the old Winnipeg Hydro service area to bring this area up to modern standards. Maybe the city was not spending as much as they could have in capital investments as they knew they would be selling it eventually.

the city ran hydro poorly like something they could cut funding from and so hydro pushed the city to sell its self to mb hydro as they knew it was unsustainable the way it was being run

This renewal project is the reason the new Hydro yard was built on the old Molson brewery site.

I think that the Molson brewery site is a temporary staging area for the new poles and transformers that had to be installed to handle the higher voltages coming out of the new substation.

I think the project may be winding down as there seems to be less stuff sitting there now than there was this time last year.

Does anybody know where on Sutherland Ave the Christmas Cheer Board is operating out of this year?

Apparently the Manitoba Metis Federation is giving them free use of a warehouse on Sutherland for a few months that they bought as an investment building.

Don't kid yourself. Americans would regard Mississauga as a suburb of Toronto. So would most Canadians. That is all Mississauga is. A suburb of Toronto. end of story.

And now we see that the Provincial Government is running Hydro far worse. Face it, our Government is a joke. No wonder we are dead last in the West, in terms of standard of living.
