At this time, the City of Vancouver is undertaking a public dialogue to better
understand the community’s relationships to the site and to assist in determining some
of the goals that will inform the redevelopment of the site. The project includes the
re-landscaping of the areas between the building and the sidewalks along Howe,
Georgia and Hornby. Additionally, there are vaults and support spaces under the plaza
and along Howe Street that immediately require re-waterproofing.
The goal of the City is to create a plaza that reflects the needs and desires of the
public, respects its location at the historical entry to the Vancouver Art Gallery
building and its relationship to Robson Square. The urgency for the work is due to the
immediate need to excavate the NE portion of the plaza and renew the waterproofing
around the underground vaults of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
I noticed that the City cut down the two maple trees on Nelson Street next to The Yaletown Keg.
Less green is always a sad thing, so I hope they had a proper reason for it. There has been plenty of work going on along that stretch of Nelson St. Many morning you can't anymore keep up with the normally perfectly working green traffic light wave.

We've gotten word that now Vancouver's large Downtown post office (Federally owned and used by Canada Post) is for sale, several larger-format retailers are interested in the space. Walmart and Target are searching for Downtown Vancouver space with no success. We've been informed that they are in talks with potential purchasers to occupy space either in a restored space or an entirely new, purpose-built complex including retail, offices and residences.
This is very new information and we've been informed that we will be provided more information tomorrow by a Vancouver-based commercial real estate broker. Please stay tuned for what may become a very controversial commercial real estate project in the heart of Downtown Vancouver.
Part of me really does love the post office as is. It's so evocative of a certain era, while not appearing decrepit or aesthetically misguided. At the same time, how can it be repurposed for uses other than office?
Just saw this mentioned in the Province - Flyover Canada - a 4D movie experience is being installed at the former CN IMAX theatre at Canada Place. Opening next year.
Yeah, the whole facade has scaffold being installed now. East to West, and bottom to top. They may have had to remove some while the lower awnings and porticos were demolished, but it's in full swing now. Would LOVE to see some renderings.
I drove past it the other day. I believe there is a small board showing a rendering of the project. I barely got a glimpse of whatever the board was depicting anyways as I was distracted with all the scaffolding. If somebody's in the hood and that board is still standing, they could grab a pic of it.
To me the Post Office building brings back memories of manyGDR-erabuildings in Berlin and elsewhere in East-Germany. Although these are not the most horrible pieces of architecture from that era, I am still not a fond of them. Surely in Vancouver such a building is unique, as no other such building (thank God!) exists.
Yeah, they could keep the Georgia facade and a bit of depth to create a mid-rise slab fronting Georgia - that would allow a lot of room in the back for towers.
