Well d Condo is this week's RenderPornStar and with the project name and their reference to the "A List" it will be interesting to see if y'all vote to A or D List this rendering.

Along with Glass House Lofts Centre Point Winnipeg's other section is to be marketed under "Glas Condominium" so clearly they'll be selling lofts and condos.

It's interesting that they have a lot of "bedrooms" with no windows or natural light. In Toronto, they don't (and presumably can't) call those "bedrooms" ... they're always "dens".

I never noticed that before. Must be an Ontario thing because Thunder Bay's waterfront condos leave the "bedrooms" without windows blank, or label them "den".

D Condo's floorplans do look pretty uninspired to me. The Thunder Bay condo's plans actually look quite exciting by comparison, mostly because of the angles. (They're designed so that every condo has a decent view of the lake.)

Same thing applies here. I've gone to see condos with a windowless "bedroom" and the realtor said it could used as a bedroom but by law they had to call it a den.

Though i think I remember hearing that if there's a sprinkler system then they can legally call them a bedroom. Maybe that's the case here.

I wouldn't count on it.
I'm a fan of the Bay as a building, but this constant propping up of our downtown by Crown corps has to stop.

If anyone thinks that having another government ediface on Portage will create any kind of urban vitality, they need to give their head a shake.

How disappointed would you be if you walked down the Miracle Mile in Chicago, and the only tenants were soup kitchens and social agencies?

The Hydro Building, Human Rights Museum, WRHA Building, new Police HQ, MPI @ Cityplace, the takeover of the CN Station by Stats Canada, an ever expanding U of W and RRC, Thunder Bird House, and the Bell Hotel recovery centre; this isn't economic growth. It's taxpayer leveraged building!

I agree to a certain extent, but in terms of your bolded section, why can't they contribute to urban vitality. If the Hydro Building brings 2000 people downtown everyday, has streetfront retail, shopping and dining, how does it not contribute to urban vitality? The workers shop, eat, and contribute to the downtown. I'm not sure how you can compare or group something like the Hydro Building to the WHRA building, the dynamics of which are completely different. Was the post office building contributing to urban vitality more than the police station will? It's fine to decry the proliferation of government offices in the downtown, but I think that's a separate issue from what you're arguing...

Lotteries exists. Government exists. WRHA exists. Do you want to see them downtown, or in the middle of nowhere?

Obviously there's more to life than government. But if the public sector won't invest in the downtown, why would the private sector?

Your credit card analogy makes no sense.

Agreed. It's not as if retailers are falling over themselves to set up shop downtown. Better to have government offices than nothing at all.

the efforts should be focussed on convincing the bay to stay downtown, not filling the upper floors......it is not a good news story to fill the bay with offices and lose the bay itself.

i fear that the government is missing the point...a full bay building with offices is less valuable than a 60% empty bay building that still has the bay.

funny article in the paper today about.....an article to say that nobody will tell him anything.

I thought the article summed up the current state of things pretty well, efforts have been underway for over 10 years to find someone to move into the upper floors of the Bay and nothing has changed.

Maybe the Government can get together with the owner of the local hockey team and build a new arena to replace the Bay, perhaps one with more seats than MTS Centre. After all MTS Centre is getting close to 10 years old and I am sure is well past its useful life now. Everyone should have learned from last time if you don't have a proper facility for the local hockey team they will leave town.

I look around downtown and wonder how a province that is half the size of the city of Toronto could require so much government. I suppose it's better than empty buildings, but it's a bit depressing that almost nothing ever happens except with tax money. This must surely be encouraging property owners to sit on their holdings waiting for a cash-cow government tenant rather than hustling for private development ideas. If the government was worth anything, it would have someone devoted full-time to working out a new vision for the Bay as the Bay, and not let it become some Lloyd Axworthy 'centre' for something.

Is anyone seeing the 2,000 hydro employees out and about at lunch, buying up a storm at local retailers, as was predicted? How is that going? We always hear these things said before the projects, but there's never any/much follow-up.
