Looking at Google maps the Safeway at 285 Marion is about the same distance from Waterfront as the Safeway in the Village.

Would the Marion store be a little easier to get to as it would not have the same traffic problems as going through downtown?

What reference point are you comparing the distance from the Safeway to in the Village? Cause Living at 55 Nassau to Safeway was a 2 min walk (where I used to live) and from where I live now (Bannatyne) to the Marrion Safeway would be a 20+ min walk. It takes me 18+mins to get to the Bay. I bought a 4L milk there once and walked home. My fingers were bruised from the plastic bag handle cutting off my circulation. So, thats why The Bay isn't convenient to people in the East Exchange or Waterfront.

He's saying Waterfront to Viliage is same as Waterfront to Marion.

Oh. My apologies. I obviously missed that part. But that sounds right . Marrion may be a bit closer, definitely less traffic.

Ive talked to many in the area who would love a grocery store in the area so they don't have to drive out to get groceries. Walking to the Forks or The Bay is too far. Read my post carefully, you do see where i SAID the Grocery stores LEFT downtown, thus pointing to the BAY and the little IGA and the Extrafoods, are ALL in lower income area's and always have been either renters or lower income families. The EAST exchange doesn't even have a grocery store, so no idea where you would even think I am claiming this.

Technically Sobeys owns the IGA on Donald.

So they might just be renovating and converting that one.

That'd be inline with some others around the city. They're building a new Sobeys across from the IGA on Plesis (I assume to replace it) and the Maples IGA is under going renovations which appear to be a conversion to the Sobeys brand.

The IGA on Plesis is a conversion from when the Penner Foods chain was taken over. With the growth in the area it makes sense to do a new build Sobey's as a replacement. This would be similar to what happened in Gimli.

As for the Maples IGA, I have not been in the store for a while however it would seem this is an exterior renovation of the property with any changes in the store being more general upkeep than a conversion. My indications are the plan is the convert the North Gate Zeller's to a Sobey's as a possible replacement/relocation of the Maples IGA. That would definiately make sense due to the increased visibility, ability to draw from the Garden City area and larger available foot print.

I think you mean MLCC (Manitoba Liquor Control Commission) and MLC (Manitoba Lotteries Corporation). MPI already own their own building. It is MLCC and MLC that are amalgamating. Seeing how MLCC is spending millions to renovate their current building it sounds like their could be a considerable waste of money if they move.

They've been talking about moving Manitoba Lotteries to the Bay for years (from Empress I believe). I think Shindico was the agent when that discussion began

I wouldn't count on it.
