SALT LAKE CITY — The state’s Olympic Exploratory Committee is unanimously recommending Salt Lake City pursue another bid, this time for the 2026 Winter Games.

“Utah’s Olympic legacy is strong and vibrant and ready to provide the foundation for a future Olympic Winter Games,” the committee stated in a 36-page report to Gov. Gary Herbert and Salt Lake Mayor Ralph Becker dated Wednesday.

The economic benefits of hosting another Olympics is expected to produce a $5 billion economic impact, provide more than 30,000 jobs, years of employment and generate more than $75 million in revenues to state and local governments, the report concludes...

St. Moritz, Lake Placid and Innsbruck have hosted twice each. 1976 was the last repeat host (Innsbruck)

Plans to renovate the Capitol Theatre and to build a Center for Dance on its west side counted heavily on receipt of $6 million in federal tax credits to round out financing for the $33.4 million arts center.

But the federal money did not come through — at least not this year.

Renovations to the historical Capitol Theatre will begin in June, but Salt Lake County officials and Ballet West are still waiting for federal assistance that could be applied to building a Center for Dance adjacent to it.

Down but not defeated, Salt Lake County and its partners at Ballet West have devised an alternate approach to continuing the project, one that expects to corral those "New Market Tax Credits" in the next federal funding cycle — if Congress extends the program later this year.

"We have every reason to feel optimistic," Erin Litvack, county community services director, told the County Council on Tuesday. "Our [tax credit] application is at the head of the queue, lined up for the allocation in 2013. Every indicator makes us believe that is possible."...

I live across the street. They put up the construction fence the last week of September and started bringing in equipment and grading around October 1st. They've made a lot more headway than that photo shows now, too. The hole is pretty deep and they have quite a bit of heavy equipment there. Looks like it's going to go up quickly!

Yeah.. Iv noticed the fence.. Just not the digging. I just drove today.. Looks like its coming along.

It looks like north temple has all lanes of traffic open from I15-I215.. They still have the 25mph signs up though... I hope they open up all lanes between 300 west and I15 soon.. I dont see any reason that they should be blocked.

Also! Der Wienerschnitzel has been stripping the yellow paint off, exposing the original red color.. I hope they stick with red it looks much nicer. I didn't like it when they painted it yellow.

They are also opening a new dollar store on 900 west.. Across from radio shack.. Hopefuly the dollar center on north temple will close and be ripped down along with the trashy car place on the corner and radio shack. I would like to see radio shack stay on north temple.. Perhaps they could move to the bottom of the old biomat building... That whole corner on 900 west needs to go though.

I'm currently crunching the numbers to see if I can make a North Temple project happen. If the numbers make sense I will then be taking it to investors, and hope to do so within the next month.

One way of doing it is once you've logged in, on the "Category" drop down select "Idea" and it should list all those in the idea category and under each description should be a "Vote"
