If Soho Italia was reduced from 35 to 30, the Icon will come down to at least 35. My guess is it'll be 32-33.

I also agree with you guys about the podium, but with the size of the lot (which is not very large) I don't see there being much of a podium or anything pedestrian friendly. The building will have to butt-up against their property line in order to support such a tall building. They would need to acquire the next door church to be able to have room for any type of landscaped area or street/pedestrian friendly base.

Looks like their gambit paid off; they have Holmes on the record saying something should be 30 storeys.

Holmes has become so obsessed with numbers and heights that she wouldn't know good urban design if it kicked her in the face. Just because we have certain restrictions in our CBD that make 30+ storey towers impossible on most lots doesn't mean that something taller than that is always "too big" or "out of scale". With proper setbacks and street-level interaction on a fairly wide street I don't see why 45 or 40 can't fit in with the long-term plan for this neighbourhood.

I dunno - I'm kinda with Holmes on this one. Downtown would be one thing, but I find that Little Italy is too low-density for this to integrate well with the fabric of the place, not to mention the infrastructure demands that would come. I'm not saying no to density, but that big an increase of population in such a short time in one spot would be a lot to swallow for a place that doesn't normally experience it.

I wonder what Jane Jacobs would say...

She would probably have said that height wasn't the issue -- street-level use is.

I'm happy to see high-rises going up in this, and other areas of the city period. I wish there were more happening in Ottawa South, other than Distillery and the little hotel on Walkley...

Wasn't council supposed to convene in October to decide on the zoning? I may have heard wrong and the zoning is done? Not sure, I went over the entire thread and didn't find my answer.

I've checked the city website and didn't find any scheduling related to this.
