yeah, seriously, why blame the esl students when the sidewalks are the problem? if you and a couple friends can't stand outside and smoke in the street, where are we?

Yes, back to the topic. So, help me with this list of what's under currently construction downtown that doesn't already have it's own individual thread:

- Artemisia at SE corner of Helmcken and Hornby
- 5 (?) storey building at SW corner of Robson and Granville
- 40 million dollar renovation at the Bay's downtown location (Vancouver Sun article)

Are the railings on top of Stadium Station new?
I don't think I've ever noticed them before...

The recently installed Bay canopy:

Looks pretty close to what was there in this 1918 photograph, from the the Vancouver archives:

Thanks for the updates.

I really hope they are not planning on leaving the current entrances and doors as they are.

They look great! Too bad the old upper windows are still blocked off. Even if they were just shallow areas with windows and displays behind, it would be better. Still, with the glass portions, light years ahead of what were the ugliest awnings in the city.

The old awnings were an eyesore, but the one part about them that's better than their successors is that they actually covered the entire sidewalk. These new awnings are wimpy in comparison.

Vancouver is a celebration of wimpy awnings.

I think it was discussed before in one of the threads - that heritage buildings may get some slack from requirements for continuous weather protection.
i.e. Hotel Vancouver doesn't have a continuous awning.

Walking along the sidewalk at The Bay is far nicer than it was with the heavy awning.
I'm also guessing that some of the bus stops have been permanently relocated away from The Bay (to 701 West Georgia) so that The Bay sidewalk is not akin to a bus loop.

From the Globe and Mail - The downtown Post Office site is in play:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/brit...tage-advocates-nightmare/article4597726/

Quote:
According to information being traded among the city’s tightly connected network of brokers, developers and marketers, there are already roughly 20 companies and pension funds interested in the site, including the budget retailer Target.

...
However, heritage advocates say there is nothing ironclad to protect the building.

“As a federally owned building, the lower levels of government cannot put any kind of protection on [the building] that is binding,” said Heritage Vancouver president Don Luxton.

Is there some particular reason why we'd want to protect the current building? It's a giant box that kills the surrounding streets (sure the stone is nice I guess).

Also re. Bay renovations, anyone have any info on how they are reconfiguring the basement/Skytrain level? I want to know if they're going to keep a clear corridor between the Granville Station concourse and the Vancouver Centre entrance down the stairs/escalator. It's the best chance of making a better connection between the Expo and Canada lines at City Centre.
