That was never a serious proposal. But aside from that and an office tower from the 90's, no one has ever tried to put something there.

I was looking at that lot yesterday thinking the exact same thing. Hopefully as things pick up someone will do something with it. If Figat7th is really successful that could be a catalyst of the development of that lot given its proximity. Also, if Farmers Field were to be built, then I assume some version of Metropolis would be as well. With LA Live, Staples Center, Farmers Field, Metropolis, Figat7th, and potentially Avenue of the Angels all in short walking distance, I can't imagine that lot staying empty.

I remember we were talking about the potential buyers looking into that lot if they didn't win the car wash lot, and now that that is over with, they could very well look into that lot pretty soon! Hopefully that gash in the skyline is filled.

They'll probably blow it and put in some 6-story, faux-Italian, Rick Caruso, mixed use abomination. That lot needs to be a 2,000+ ft megastructure so in 20 years when the office market is hot again, they won't be stuck with an Angelina, eating up prime real estate.

Kelis is hotter than Faith.

And LA doesn't need a 2,000 foot tall building at all.

Do you understand how tall that is? That would make it at least the second tallest building IN THE WORLD. It would be 300 ft or so bigger than the new World Trade Tower in New York, which is going to be the new tallest tower in that city. We can't expect a developer to drop that type of money in LA, it just would never pencil out.

Fell in love with this video

We are indeed changing, and the streetcar return will only make it better. =]

Side note concerning the streetcar. If it goes ahead. How many will use that rail line?

Simply trying to make a point that developers seem to lack foresight, scaling back because of current market conditions rather than looking at future trends. There is a MASSIVE housing shortage downtown, with that Downtown News article saying some landlords reporting 98-99% vacancy and constantly rising rents. There are waiting lists everywhere I look DT (people WAITING in line to pay money to landlords - including myself!); I'll bet Apex will regret not building a second tower when number one fills in a few months.

Sieze the opportunity, that lot won't come back if someone puts a 22 story mixed use on it. Plus we have no high-rise apartments (60+ stories) in LA. Im not the only one trying to re-create New York by the beach; no one would trade sun and space for dense city life otherwise.

And it's hyperbole, I understand how tall 2000 feet is - its 2000 feet

So in order to appease DTLA's lack of apartment buildings, you want to build a 2,000 foot tall building?

How is this spam? We're talking about development in downtown. Even if it is hypothetical.

Is talking about how apartment market conditions affect what buildings break ground really that off topic?

And WestCoastSupertall, now that you've explained your hyperbole, I do agree about developers being shortsighted. Often times, a developer builds a six-story building now when, in the future, he could be making more money off of a 20+ story building. Immediate gratification, I suppose.

nothing wrong with that.. of course it wont happen but if DTLA gets an opportunity to build a 900ft+ tower somewhere... sure why not?? its making use of the space above.. yes with todays market whatever it doesnt make any sense.. but in the future it will.. think of it as preparation for whats to come... San Diego has built high rise condos that still somewhat sit kinda empty... but people are starting to move downtown and are slowly, but surely, filling them up... its just a matter of time.... so if a tower sits vacant... just be patient

a lot of downtown nimby's on here who think they arent lol like a high rise in the old bank district???? OH NO!!!

1100 Wilshire was never more than 10% leased when it was an office tower. It failed dramatically as an office tower. It was only until 2005 or so when it was converted into condos. What sense does it make to build a building and it go unused?
