according to saskatoon construction thread theres 2 cranes coming down starting the 18th that will be coming here for hospital projects

Heard a rumour that Earl's on Main is planning on building a new, larger restaurant with rooftop patio on the surface parking lot to the north, and then presumably demolishing the current one.

I guess they were considering a massive reno to the current restaurant, but now the plan has apparently changed.

No details or other info, just what I heard.

How about, instead of building a suburban-style restaurant on a potential skyscraper area, they build it in Union Station?

Domes > Patios.

Reminds me, if my restaurant that I worked at built a restaurant inside Union Station...

And don't forget that a lot of these things get announced as coming soon and then never go anywhere.

I remember two Seniors towers announced with big fanfare that were going to be built on parking lots downtown.

One was in 1994, Lions Club Tribune Towers a 18 story 55+ Seniors apartment where the Tribune building was and the other by a different developer was on the Donald Ave City Place Parking lot.

Both were going to be connected to the Sky walk system through existing buildings but even that was not a good enough selling feature to get people to pre-lease enough units for them to start up.

True, but then you look at all the ones that we never heard about that just pop up out of nowhere, so I think it evens out, plus most of those ideas were when winnipeg was, well DEAD. This is not the case now, 90 percent of stuff said to be built now gets built.

Currently taking my traditional exchange walk that i take whenever im home (came. Back for some turkey this weekend), noticed one of the james buildings got an addition that i dont remember seeing in the renders. Its the one thats supposed to get the 2 or 3 level addition on top, has this design changed??

Also on my walk noticed there was construction fencing around the pumphouse, did i miss something? Or is the fencing there only as a result of sky 2?

An artsy arts district
Curtain soon to rise on Market Avenue upgrade

After a summer of churned-up pavement and orange blockades on Market Avenue, the plain street that runs off Main Street down the middle of the arts district is getting its promised facelift. The infrastructure is pretty much done.
"Whew," say downtown drivers.

"Hooray" say the waiting arts groups.
"It's an eclectic and artistic look done in conjunction with Moment Factory out of Montreal, which did the halftime show for the Super Bowl with Madonna," says CentreVenture's Ross McGowan.
"They do lighting design, so we engaged them to come up with a unique concept for the district. They lit the Parliament buildings in Ottawa and work all over the world. They're a team of people who come out of Cirque de Soleil -- a very creative bunch. They can make a major event out of lights." (Moment Factory's saucy website advertises: "We do it in public. We do it in the street. We do it between walls.")
So, here's what they're doing in Winnipeg: Picture multi-coloured stained-glass kites lighting the way down Market along with upgraded sidewalks and seating areas and a half dozen more trees on the Centennial Centre lot to add to the 14 to 16 trees already there. This lighted area will be the gateway to all of the arts centres in the district. Within a one-block area, you can catch shows at the Pantages, the Centennial Concert Hall, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Tom Hendry Warehouse and the planetarium.
The theatre season hasn't quite started yet, but the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's season is already underway and executive director Trudy Schroeder says the construction "wreaked havoc" this summer -- but for a great cause. "It's a good thing that both CentreVenture and the City of Winnipeg came to the realization there really is a distinct cultural district in Winnipeg.

I agree. Although last I heard it was 25 000 a month to rent out that space. I know nothing about restaurants, but that seems like a lot for one space.
