Nice to see another retailer moving a successful business into the Exchange.

2) Target has an application for a 170,000 sq ft store at the (former) Bomber Stadium

170,000! Thats pretty big. Sounds like a Super Target...
... so is it an 'educated conclusion' that H&M takes over renovated space in the former Polo Park Zellers? How big of a store do they want? How big is the existing zellers?

The new Zellers for the old stadium site will be a Super Target.

I wonder if this means the Sports Mart in Unicity will be closing as they belong to the same retail group as Sport Check.

What to do with the former Zellers store?

Since it looks like Target will open their store at the former Bomber Stadium.
This will leave the current Zellers store vacant.

Here are some maps of Polo Park during the years

Map of Polo Park sometime before 2nd floor expansion

Map of Polo Park right after its 2nd floor expansion

Current Mall Map

http://www.cfretail.com/FloorPlans/P..._floorplan.pdf

Zellers first opened a store on the ground floor, before moving upstairs during the 2nd floor expansion.
After Brettons folded, Zellers took over their space, and closed its old entrance (where Eddie Bauer is right now)

The current Zellers store is almost 100,000 sq ft (to big for H&M)

You might have to divide the Zellers site back to 2 units (The former Zellers and Brettons units)

Where did you hear that from? IF that is true, I would at least hope it ends up being one of the downtown-ish, urban, modern-looking store formats, at the very least.

Heard a rumor today that Sobey's is considering the current Zellers location on McPhillips for a for line store. This would be in keeping with the on-going rumors that they have been looking for a location on McPhillips north of Inkster for years.

Yeah, so we DID have a Baskin-Robbins back then. Wonder what happened

I also kind of miss the old A&W restaurant from pre-2003. I loved that place, and being able to see the buse's there when I was a kid.

For some reason I thought that Sobey's had taken a lease on the old Canadian Tire on Leila to put a store in, but had never done anything with it other than donate the space to the Christmas Cheer Board before Shoppers Drug's moved in.

I recall hearing that story too and think it made have made the rounds in the media back when it happened. For some reason the store never did get developed and that neighbourhood is still without a full-line Sobey's. The rumor would seem to work with the size of the Zeller's store and the relatively small size of the front parking lot. I wonder though how they would address the double store enterance (mall and parking lot).

They could always just shut the mall entrance down. When Wallmart took over the former Woolco location on Leila (Home Depot now) there was an entrace to that little strip mall that connected all the way to Safeway. I think the mall pretty much died and Staples took over a chunk of the former mall. Maybe I'm misremembering.

Closing down the mall entrance might kill North Gate though.

From what I recall all the initial Woolco conversions kept the dual enterance, this would have included Regent, Grant Park and St Vital in addition to McPhillips. Of those locations, only St Vital is still operating in the same location and has since added a walkway that directs people from the mall to the old parking lot enterance.

As for the mall by the old McPhillips location, my memory tells me it was pretty much dead long before the conversion happened. Even in its hayday I do not recall it being a significant draw of any sorts.

Regarding the Northgate Zellers conversion, from the perspective of Sobey's I do not see any real positive to keeping it open. To me it would make most sense to kill the direct parking lot enterance, relocate Joey's and have an enterance off the parking lot there.

If the mall, the old Superstore and the car wash are all owned by the same group of people it would almost seem to make sense to keep the Zelers structure but level everything else. Move the resturants close to McPhillips and do a stand-alone big box style strip mall along the outside edges of the property. This would make way better use of the available space than the relatively wasted back parking lot currently does.

You can see the buses from the current A&W. Bus drivers seemed to be going in there all the time like it's their personal lunchroom or something.

A Google search found the Norhtdale mall listed on the Crushman Wakefield commercial web site as being for sale so somebody may want to buy it an redevelop it in a different direction. Its a little over 16 acres so it has potential to be changed.

You may remember if you live in EK/NK a few years ago the new owners of the Northdale Shopping center made changes and the Zellers was torn down and replaced with a new Sobey's.

And the old Sobey's nee Loblaw's was replaced by an Access Manitoba and Mc Donalds drive through, leaving the retail strip mall on the south part of the mall intact.

There may be agreement with A&W to use the place as comfort stop.

Person I know leased an Esso in North Kildonan and apparently there was an arrangement with Transit to let the drivers use the washroom.

Transit would deliver paper towels and TP to the station on a regular basis so his staff did not have to worry about not having enough on hand for the drivers to use.
