Beginning May 6, Lorne Street between 11th Avenue and 12th Avenue will be closed for construction. The construction is scheduled for completion by mid October. The 12th Avenue intersection will be closed for the duration of the construction, with the 11th Avenue intersection also closed for three weeks in August or September.
While the construction may cause some inconvenience for drivers, it will allow for important upgrades. The project includes:

• Replacing the road structure with a concrete road so Lorne Street will have the structural capacity to carry Transit routes.
• Water, storm and domestic sewer upgrades.
• Sidewalk, curb and gutter replacement and landscaping enhancements.
• Street light replacement.
• Fiber optics and communication cable relocation.
• Potential SaskEnergy gas line work.
• New SaskPower duct bank to increase future capacity for growth.
• Traffic signal installation.

Traffic will be closed throughout the construction, with detours and signage in place. Transit buses will follow detours and will be rerouted.
Central Library will remain open during construction

Oct 11th is the official 100th birthday of the completion of the Sask legislature building. There are some real interesting photos at the below link. The big-ticket item last month was a permit issued to East Regina Holdings for the Best Western hotel valued at $7 million on 3830 E Eastgate Drive.
Other large permits issued in September include $6 million for retail alterations at Southland Mall. The suburban mall is undergoing major renovations in the former Walmart site, which has been sitting empty since Walmart relocated to the Grasslands commercial park at Harbour Landing in early 2010.
Canadian Tire will take over the 135,0000 square feet formerly occupied by Walmart. As well, Sport Chek will move into the mall from a separate building nearby, while Mark's Work Warehouse and Atmosphere are to move by next spring into the shopping centre.
There are also plans for renovating the interior and exterior of the 38-year-old mall, with upgrades to the food court, washrooms and common areas, plus new entrances.
Two apartment projects valued at more than $5 million each are being built by Seymour Pacific Developments at 3200 and 3300 Rochdale Blvd., while the new Cabela's store is underway at 4901 Gordon Rd.
Harvard Developments was issued a building permit valued at $4 million for the 50,000 square-foot sporting goods store.

The City is busy readying traffic lights and putting up signs on the plaza to get it ready for traffic. They also install new reflectors to dilineate the lanes.

So silly question: with those reflectors there, how are they going to clear snow from the plaza? Wouldn't the graders rip those up? Or will this be cleaned by bobcat and then a brush?

This is a really impressive number for the city. What I find interesting is that these numbers are mostly, I believe, private-sector activity (residential housing and commercial buildings), perhaps with a few schools thrown in....but it's definitely not being driven by govt-sector construction. A change in economic drivers for a "government" town.

Did anyone take in the Breakout West 2012 music festival in Regina last weekend? I was in town and the city was just buzzing.

If you're wondering what this has to to with construction, stay with me for a moment....Breakout West featured 50 western Canadian bands at a dozen Regina venues over 2 nights. Grant Lawrence (‏@GrantLawrence), a CBC Radio host from Vancouver, tweeted this about the Artesian on 13th Ave:

"Could the Artesian in Regina be the nicest under-500 capacity venue in Western Canada? It's gorgeous! #BOW2012"

What a great comment to the Artesian! Congrats to the owners for their vision in creating that venue out of a former church.

They essentially do the same thing. That's why I would hope the use is minimal.

The East Indian restaurant in the Scarth Street mall is being converted into an Italian restaurant. WIth Mayor Pat Fiacco's Italian new restaurant about to open and the one in the old Neo Japanica restaurant, that's 3 new Italian restaurants in the last little while, Viva Italia!
