More deets on Odyssey Sports

Atlanta attorney Harold Buckley, Jr—a partner with Wilson Brock & Irby—has proposed the development of the Odyssey Sports Atlanta, a 514k SF athletic complex at 450—464 Bishop Street in Downtown Atlanta that will include an Olympic-size swimming pool, 10 basketball courts, 11 tennis courts, two lacrosse/soccer fields and a hockey rink. According to the DRI application filed with the state community service department, the facility is scheduled for build-out by 2017.

Yeah, the main problem is just the rendering's low quality. (I'm using the word rendering loosely here.) Presumably an architect given a reasonable budget would design something halfway decent looking. You've got to admit, the rendering may look ugly, but the building it depicts doesn't look cheap!

I've said it before, but if you want to add greenspace and connectivity with Atlantic Station, I think redeveloping the existing railway bridge across I-75 (which used to provide access to the plant) into a ped/path bridge would be about as awesome of a project as they get. Atlantic Station is only a half mile from the Amtrak Station using this route, but any legal walking route is over a mile. The tracks over it are only used as a siding for Amtrak on occasion, and there are other tracks nearby that could serve that purpose easily.

I think that's a great idea about developing the old railroad bridge over 75. I looked at the map and a path could easily be connected to the Beltline path at Tanyard Creek. Right now the only semi-safe way to get to Atlantic Station on a bike is from 17th street bridge. And getting to the 17th street bridge is deadly by bike.

Is complete demo of the building back on the table? The article is vague. I love the site plan that kept the front 1/3 of the building in place.
I walked by there earlier today and noticed a bunch of activity and a half-dozen of those storage containers called "PODS"

Yesterday I saw a moving van doing something with that failed condo project at the corner of Piedmont and 5th street. It's been an eyesore for like 3 years

Umm...no. I work at 500 Bishop St. Putting this next door is impossibly STUPID, especially considering the recently-demolished Siemens building/lot at 17th and Northside (north of IKEA). It's huge, and it's much more connected to Atlantic Station than the site they're proposing. My building is on the corner of 17th & Bishop, and we are most definitely not part of AS. It's a loooooong walk over that bridge. I can't imagine this eyesore going up, surrounded by 1-story industrial buildings.

It is a very good idea, which is why I put it in the Loring Heights Master Plan that I prepared ;-)

You can read more here.

Atlanta City Council passes panhandling law:

First conviction: 30 days of community service

Second conviction: 30 days in jail

Third conviction: 90 days in jail

This may help development downtown, if it's enforced and potential developers see improvement.

honestly i think the ideal use for that would be a marta track that would serve atlantic station and west midtown, and i think it would be an AMAZING idea to repurpose the old brookwood station into a marta station after the new multi-modal terminal opens in downtown.

I didn't think Amtrak was even going to be at the new multi-modal transit hub? Thought it was just an expanded 5 Points station with increased bus service and Greyhound/cabs added in? I just remember being constantly underwhelmed by the MMTH every time I read about it (like couldn't we even do half of what Denver is doing?).

Also, on that note I keep hearing all sorts of bits about rentals in Atlanta/Midtown and how strong everybody is doing with lease-up and continued rent growth. No softening any time soon, but like 5 new projects break ground or have broken ground this month, so we'll revisit in 18 months.

Waiting for the day we can stop building massive garages as part of every new development. Just got back from Seattle and they've been building multifamily without garages since before they had LRT and streetcars (in fact the north Belltown neighborhood isn't really even served by transit and they still don't build garages there!). It's pretty pathetic looking at Midtown at all these HALF EMPTY garages built because developers/lenders believe they're necessary in this city and code hasn't kept up with the times. In the 3 towers I have lived in in Midtown, every garage has been half empty with more bikes than cars.

Just drove Edgewood to check out new bar and streetcar progress and I was definitely very impressed! I noticed lots of activity, people walking about, new restaurants, new stores, new bars, and they have sections now where they are practically laying rail! Lots of little building rehabs, etc. Definitely will be the place to stake out development soon...let's just hope whatever shit they started in Sweet Auburn in the way of new apartments will never happen again. New store on Peachtree across from Woodruff Park (a hookah shop no doubt).

If downtown can clean up and attract white collar professionals in addition to the grungy types and creative class it already attracts, I'm seriously moving there in the future.

Thank you for the update, Simms! Is it possible to get a few pics of the Edgewood area? I keep hearing about how impressive all of the new activity over there is and want to see it in pictures. We would greatly appreciate it!

Very true. Two things related to this struck me when I came to Atlanta: 1) I had never had a job (Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Edinburgh) where I was expecting a place to park my car. On the faculty at the Hopkins Med Institutions there were only a handful of parking spaces available AND you had to pay for them and were reassigned when available (we joked that we had to watch the obituaries to grab a new place) - the result we took the bus to work or paid through the nose to park in some private lot. IN Atlanta, parking is often expected with the job. 2) High rises rarely had parking facilities; again, one parked on the street or tried to find some private garage nearby. Perhaps now is the time for some new high rises, particularly in midtown to build with less garage space and/or to share with another nearby garage. Of course, all this is tied to the availability of a comprehensive and convenient transit system.

Krystal HQ to central perimeter?

Bis Now Atlanta is reporting that Krystal has hired a local broker to look for space for its HQ relocation in the Central Perimeter market. http://www.bisnow.com/atlanta-real-estate/2012/10/04/krystal-hq-to-central-perimeter/

Me too. I remember signing on back in the day and seeing one sometimes two a week... those were the days.
