I'd love to see these mounted to the alley-facing sides of buildings, perhaps in the Alley of Light just north of Jasper.
Considering that the "pocket park" next to Sobey's is also being considered for a reno, the idea of utilizing the artwork along the alley has a lot of potential! I'd maybe touch base with the Alley of Light peeps!

City report chews on issue of sidewalk dining in Edmonton

EDMONTON - The city is looking to squeeze more sunshine out of Edmonton’s summer by streamlining the process for restaurants to receive sidewalk patio licences.

It takes an average six to eight weeks to win permission to put out tables on public space. But under a report going to council’s executive committee on Oct. 10, that could be cut to as little as three days for minor developments.

Officials are also looking to simplify review procedures, shorten processing times and change street parking to allow more café space.

About time...Edmonton is in the stone age about use of sidewalk patins. NOW if only someone in Redfords government would take the bull by horns and get the Province out of the liquor permit business and leave it to the municipalities we would have progress. We need less Provincial meddling and more control by cities and towns to meet local needs.

I do agree that the process to get a patio is prohibitive and wrapped in red tape... glad to see that something may be done.

I vehemently disagree that the city should be in control of liquor regulations though. I don't believe that the city (and most notably the p & d office) are capable of responsibly administrating those regulations across the city and in the best intrest of its' citizens. I've seen too many bad permits approved.

The ledge has scaffolding around the dome, and a mini-crane on the roof. Is this to take down the special lighting or something else?

I was at the university doing homework and I took this photo of the Pearl. It looks like it's up to the 19th floor.

City could save millions with space in new office tower, report says

EDMONTON - The city could save millions of dollars each year if it combines staff in a new office tower downtown, says a report coming to council this week.

The report comes as the city is involved in contentious negotiations with Oilers owner Daryl Katz about a proposed downtown arena.

Katz noted in an interview with the Journal two weeks ago that to make the economics of the arena-area development work, his company plans to build an office tower.

“To make economics work, we need the critical mass, obviously, of an office tower,” Katz said. “And guess what? The city actually needs office space that could save, by their report, taxpayers money by centralizing all their office space.... (from linky above)

^ City owns Century Place too doesn't it ?

Some of that 370k is call centre that really doesn't benefit from moving, but a lot of the city services could be condsolidated.

It sounds like, in the market right now, there's folks kicking tires for about 1.2 million S.F. of space.

Thats right next door right?

Maybe getting all the city employees under one roof might lead to better cooperation between various departments.....lol.

Did anyone go out & take advantage of community day at any of the CoE attractions ?

We decided to go to the archives at the Prince of Whales Armoury... very interesting to be able to do some research on the city, and my neighborhood in particular.

I always thought that my house was built on greenfield land in 1946, but it turns out that prior to that, much of the Parkdale neighborhood was built up with small ledge basement style houses, that were built back in the early 1900's to house miners for the nearby Dawson mines. The city grew out to that area in about 1932 and the rows of old mine houses were incorporated into the new neighborhood... but they were oddly spaced, which is why currently, every block in our area has one or two odd sized lots.... there are still two or three of the old miners' houses in the neihborhood. My house was built for a Mr. William Stwewart. who purchased it in 1946. Before that, my lot had a small miners' house on it. Turns out I'm living in an infill development

Does that explain why the blocks don't line up on either side of 118?

With the economics of new build, and the going lease rate, can a new tower be built at a competitive lease rate? The impression left in me from the last time a report on rates came up on here is no.
