Human rights museum raises additional $6M

The Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights has raised an additional $6 million in private donations over the past year, bringing the campaign total to $136 million, it was announced today.
"It is thanks to the unprecedented support of the private and public sectors that we can look forward to 2014 when the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will open its doors and forever become a beacon of light and hope for Canadians and people from around the world," said Gail Asper, the group’s national campaign chair, at a press conference at the Canad Inns Destination Centre in Winnipeg over the lunch hour today.
"By working together we will change the world."
"One week ago we celebrated as the final piece of glass was set into place on the museum’s exterior," said Stuart Murray, president and CEO of the CMHR. "Today, we build on that momentum as we transition to ensuring the galleries inside the museum are as inspiring as the architecture that greets our visitors on the outside."

While I do agree, I do have to say that there's really no reason, beyond the skate park, to be in that shot (unless you're coming into or leaving The Forks). The amenities/attractions are behind.

I was dead set against housing at the Forks but now realize that is exactly what is needed. The strip along the railway tracks would be a good spot for 4-6 story housing.

Too high. That would bloat housing. 4-10 (tops). 6 storeys is plenty high enough, especially with proper zoning.

Quick question. I am sure it has been answered but are the windows going to be that solid whitish/blue colour? Or are they just covered with a film until the opening. I must say I don't like it as is..

pegger5...what you see is what you get....sadly.....i think most of us would agree that the glass is too opaque.....far from the ethereal quality of the competition watercolours.

Did you really expect it would look like that? By way of contrast, in the ROM design, the ethereal 'crystal' of the concept was mostly replaced (in real life) with ugly strips of metal. The CMHR glass is just a minor concession to reality in comparison with that. I think CMHR will still look fairly ethereal at night, at least.
