Matter of when, not if. People who doubt the towers will ever be built are loony.

Devil's Advocate

I ultimately agree with you, uaarkson, but logically, since this hasn't been built yet, it is POSSIBLE that it still won't be built in the future. Since ANYTHING can happen in the future (another economic collapse, or another attack, or sea level rise occurring faster than anticipated and flooding lower Manhattan, etc. etc.) it is POSSIBLE that this will not be built. The site could ALSO be sold to another developer who could scratch the project or alter it dramatically. WTC2 could EASILY be re-designed as evidenced by the spire, base, and cladding alterations on WTC1 and the reduction in height of WTC3, the removal of its x-bracing, and the alteration of its lobby. Given the wide range of potential uncertainties, along with historical evidence of the past, I'd say that it is actually LIKELY that this tower won't be built EXACTLY as it's designed today (especially considering market conditions and rising labor and material costs), and it's certainly POSSIBLE (although not likely) that this tower won't be built at all.

Let's watch our words, uaarkson, before we speak in absolutes about something that is NOT absolute, especially at the expense of another poster's "intelligence"...

This. I think the spiral would be a lot more clear and have a lot more impact with the full five buildings instead of four. I'm sure the answer is still no, but does anyone know if there's any news regarding 5WTC or its design?

There's a thread for that...http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=164003&page=18

And, yes, there is news.

It's also POSSIBLE that skyscrapers could be outlawed in the future, and no new towers will be built in the City. (With Bloomberg, you never know). It's possible, but is it likely?. Obviously not. This building will be built. There's no reason to think it wouldn't be. In fact, there's more reason to believe this one will be built at this point than there is any of the other large Manhattan office towers still in the proposed stages. There is no exact timetable for any of these towers because they are not being built on spec, meaning when a tenant signs for enough space financing can be obtained. But this one is already in the ground, and eventually it will rise out of the ground.

Ah, didn't even know we had a threat for it. Much appreciated

EDIT: lol, apparently I did, because I made a post in there several months ago. How I don't remember all those renderings and the news of them rebuilding St. Nicholas eludes me...

With the basement and a small portion of the first floor lobby itself already built, I have a hard time imagining them redesigning this even if it does take 20 years to build. The amount of work would not be worth it. If anything they could make it shorter, but then they would destroy their whole site plan.

Honestly, I think Silverstein would sooner leave it as a stub indefinitely before doing that. At least then there's hope it could be build properly at some point in the future.

I hear that corporate customers are bailing in droves since they can't get a 32oz Coke anymore.

How much space is there between the central core and the glass facade?

40 feet?

I was just wondering that. It does not seem like a lot. Also, are the stairs really on the periphery like that, or is that just on the first few levels. it seems like a very awkward layout. I do love the way this building will look form the outside though.

The stairs are like that at ground level so that people can get the hell out of the building in a hurry if need be instead of creating a huge bottleneck in the lobby or on some mezzanine like on 9/11.

Current activity - east end of Tower 2.

Does anyone know why they are removing a large section of the deck just east of the above ground portions of Tower 2?

Also, I have a queasy feeling that the easternmost 40% of the proposed trading floor section of Tower 2 are no longer in the plans. The elevations (as I perceive them) and that odd triangular area adjacent to the tower seem to preclude future construction. Please tell me I am wrong.

I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to. Can you circle it on a diagram or a construction picture?

What are you talking about? That decking is new, and that's where the trading floors will be. The uncovered part of the fodunation is the core that will go up through the entire skyscraper. The triangle area is the space between the Oculus and the base of the tower. Nothing but plaza will be there. ...? I'm having a hard time understanding why you're having trouble seeing that. It's really obvious. Have you looked at the renders lately?

I know what you are talking about. Even though the building is stopped here, the street will be constructed to its final shape. Think of it as a concrete slab in the shape of the future building surrounded by sidewalk and street lights, the contract is going ahead regardless of the buildings state. They'll do what they did at the former crane pad near there. They'll remove the plywood layers and remove the old concrete before replacing it with a new slab [that can be removed later for the trading floor columns when that time comes.]

Anyone know what this building is going to look like once they complete mothballing it? I noticed they've begun to attach some steel wall framing to the pieces of the core that are above ground. Will they try to use the space as an office/store/other? I'm curious to see how they try to "blend" the unfinished stub sticking out of the ground into the surrounding space for now.
