Harbour Landing is 10 years ahead of schedule. Land is being developed faster than Dundee can keep up with.

And on their website they also call themselves a no frills chic hotel.

In January 2007, the Groupe Germain launched an all-new brand: ALT Hotels. This line is the latest concept in trendy, hip, affordable hotels, dubbed “No Frills Chic” – meaning an optimal balance of design, decor and ambience at the best possible price. The brand will be established gradually in Canada and the chain’s inaugural hotel will welcome its first guests in autumn 2007.
So you're both right.

Wow 13,000 people by 2015 and no schools. Instead the school board builds $40 million worth of schools in Douglas Park where they already have scholls and way less young families.

Yep, they need to address schooling in Harbour Landing and in the very SE because Jack Mac and Hawrylak are both bursting at the seams, not to mention high schools need to be looked at.

Then we had a Gardens on Rose press conference where thy dug up some dirt to symbolize the start of construction. That dirt pile sat there for 3 months before any activity occurred. Now we have these guys turning sod after they've already built a 3 story building.

Aren't these ceremonies meant to symbolize the start of construction? If somebody could combine Harbour Landings eagerness to build with Capital Pointe's eagerness to hold press conferences, I feel like we would have these ceremonies at the proper time

Bad news

I noticed today there was a city application sign for a parking lot on the site of the building on Hamilton Street that was torn down this summer. That's the building that created controversy as it had affordable housing and needed a lot of repair work, but the owner was too cheap to bring it up to code. Anyways, it is unfortunate that a bunch of lower income people got the boot so that another ugly surface gravel parking lot in downtown Regina could be created. I had thought that the downtown plan was to prevent that kind of thing but guess I am wrong. Would have been a great spot for a small hotel..

That's terrible. But as it is an application hopefully the city turns it down outright.

Technically the Downtown Plan is not official until the Province approves it. The city has been making decisions as though it was official. The owner therefore can make a DU application, but the City would have to be convinced to deviate from its non-binding policy.

Regina heydays

Big day yesterday for Regina!!!

1. The scope of the "Regina Revitalization Initiative" is incredible! The video on their website captures it all:
http://www.reginarevitalization.ca/stadium-project/

2. Regina forecasted to be a leader in economic growth in Canada, along with Calgary and Edmonton:

From the LP: "Regina’s city skyline is changing thanks to a boom in construction in the downtown area."
Photograph by: BRYAN SCHLOSSER, Regina Leader-Post files

3. Stunning images of the stadium design (for those of you who don't follow the stadium thread):

On that same note I noticed that the Capital Point site is being used for parking.....

As a football fan, a new stadium is exciting but what I'm more excited about is everything that comes with the RRI. They've got great ideas...I just hope that they stick to it.

A greenway between Albert and Lewvan will make the walk between downtown or the Warehouse District and Evraz easy and pleasant. It would be nice if they could do something similar along on the south side of the tracks along Sask Drive to "pretty up" that stretch between Albert and Elphinstone. It would also be nice in the future if they could extend that path into the CP land but that would require another pedestrian bridge over the tracks and probably one across Albert Street as well.

The development of the Taylor Field area will be interesting to see...If they can provide the right amenities and quality low to mid cost housing to attract a range of people. I think it could be a nice boost to the area if it's done right.

I know some people want to see something on the CP site that mimics the warehouses in the area but that's really difficult to do without looking cheesy. Canterbury Park is a good example of new buildings that meld really well with the heritage buildings in the area, but that's rare. I think with the CP site I'd prefer to see a really contemporary medium density neighbourhood...something completely different from the rest of the area. The stark contrast could create a sense of being completely separate from the rest of the Warehouse District but I think they could tie it together well. If they were to build a park/plaza area in the centre and open to Dewdney (as it shows in the concept plan) and use landscaping (greenery, trees, and street furniture - same benches, lighting, street signs, etc.) to tie it together I think it would flow really well. The Warehouse District has done planning studies (http://www.warehousedistrict.ca/about/future.php) and it would be great to see that come together along with the CP development.

And a little off topic but talking about the Warehouse District and train tracks got me thinking about passenger trains. Since I'm dreaming up ideas anyway, I'd like to see a train station built right about where Fries Tallman is (it's a silly place for a lumber yard anyway...lol). The tracks are there, it's a block to the bus depot, easy to get downtown, close to the casino, etc.

And speaking of the casino (I'm on a roll now lol)...I wish they would expand their parkade (plenty of room to do so) and get rid of the parking in front. I love the trees but I hate the parking. They could even keep the driving lane for valet and pick up/drop off. I'd love to see them a wonderful park with a large fountain or something that would be an attraction in itself. A park in the summer that could be transformed into a winter wonderland with lights and a beautifully lit "ice fountain" during the colder months.

At one time the parking lot of the Casino was a park known as CPR GArdens or Stanley Park:

Maybe a stupid question (haven't followed the whole stadium deal very closely).

If the old rail yards are being redeveloped either way, why isn't the stadium going there like the plans originally suggested?

Also, what is the pattern on the roof of the new stadium supposed to represent?

They are keeping the spur line and as such CP is now only selling 17 acres instead of 33 (not enough room for a stadium now). The more important feature is that the roof is clear as the architect wanted the prairie sky visible and also to allow people to keep views of the downtown/city.

Check out the Regina Revitalization website for more information on the whole thing.
