Some examples:
• Earlier this summer, work began on a new four-storey, 127-room Four Points by Sheraton at 2415 Dewdney Ave., which is just east of Albert Street and Dewdney Avenue. Completion is set for the summer of 2013.
The developer, VJ Management Inc., told the Leader-Post this summer it originally planned to build a 100-suite Hampton Inn in the same area, but changed those plans when the City of Regina indicated this spring the proposed replacement for Mosaic Stadium would not be located on the nearby CP container yards, but on city-owned land at Evraz Place. In response, VJ said it was looking for another location in Regina for the Hampton Inn.
• A few blocks to the south at Albert Street and Victoria Avenue, Toronto-based Brightstar Corporation is still working on its Capital Pointe development, which will include a 10-storey, 140-unit hotel and a 26-floor, 145-unit condo complex. The hotel will be a “Hilton-flagged hotel,” Brightstar’s website says. The developer admits it has run into technical problems, like the discovery of an electrical “duct bank” in the ground beneath the former Plains Hotel, demolished in late 2011 to make way for the project.
• To the southwest, local hotel insiders say a suite hotel is being planned for the Grasslands retail area of Harbour Landing. The Saskatoon firm ID’ed as the developer had nobody available Friday to confirm this.
• And in the eastern part of the city, the final touches are being put on a new hotel on the north side of Victoria Avenue East. Industry sources say it will carry the Best Western brand, but an emailed request for confirmation did not bring a response from the Arizonabased hotel giant.
• Somewhat less advanced is a plan by ALT Hotels, a Quebec-based hotel chain with a reputation for innovation, to build a “no-frills chic’’ hotel in downtown Regina. It started this process by the remarkably simple expedient of advertising in the Leader-Post for a partner with land. A spokesman earlier this summer declined to predict a startdate for construction, but said “We have a clear objective that we want to be across the country. And Regina is on the path, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.”
• Finally, the familiar West Harvest Inn at Albert Street and Parliament Avenue has been rebranded as the Executive Royal Hotel Regina by its owner, the Royal Hotel Group of Vancouver. It also rebranded a hotel in Lloydminster.
