Is that the building that looks like a prison on the outside with no windows and has the seagull thing in front of it? If so, Yes, Yes I am.

That is the first building I ever remember disliking as a child. A lot of time has passed and my contempt for architecture has grown to include the Shilo Inn, the plaza, the old public safety building (can be fixed), eat-a-burger, and just about everything on west north temple... I must say though... I went and had a second look and have decided that I don't mind the red iguana and wonderbread could be easily fixed by painting the freaking sign.. Or just removing it..

But back on point... I won't shed any tears for that building... I can get a similar and more authentic effect by going in to the UP depot... I would rather see a department store or upscale movie theater go on the empty space across the street..... Sorry to sound harsh but I honestly don't like that building and am not even sure what the point of it is. It looks like they might have a couple of confession booths or something in there... I'm not sure.. Is it a church? Or what is it? The ceiling is kind of nice I guess... But oh we'll.

That is not part of the Seagull bldg. It is next door.

The inside with the white panels had artwork hanging on them. It was not a church. It was originally a bank.

I'm a little surprised at your ignorance, being a downtown resident and all, when you have such strong opinions. No, this is not inside the metro building with the seagulls, this is one building to the south. It was originally a bank, then was later used as an art gallery. It could be easily be given a new use now that there is enough traffic on main street again. The building, except for the facade, is in good shape (just peer in the windows). The facade could easily be recreated, or someone could just put up a new simple facade.

I'm having a hard time picturing it.. There is the nice looking building on the corner, then the seagul gate prison, then it seems like mostly empty retail space, the taller building, and then bayleafe cafe.. I'll have to go have a look. The demolition stops at the taller building close to the center of the block, right?

It's this building.

http://goo.gl/maps/WYYBC

As you can see it was being used as a museum for a time. The picture on the banner is what the building used to look like.

Sorry dude.. I haven't been inside of every building on Main Street... Based on walking down the street regularly... Everything between the building on the corner and bayleafe seems pretty worthless.. I'm sure it could be used for something.. But it's not going to be... It's going to be demolished.

Oh.. Ok I've never went in... But yeah.. I doubt they will be be able to save it... Maybe it could be relocated

I thought it would be cool if they could use that as the lobby of the theatre, but I'm not sure it's at all situated to be able to do that.

It's not

Now you're referring to the tribune building as "the tall building?!"

Ugh, if you're going to have an opinion about something please know what we are actually dealing with here. It's easy to dismiss something and throw it away if you haven't experienced it.

The theater in this location is not a sure bet, so no, this building won't necessarily be demolished.

That's what I was just thinking... Restore the front of it..

I bet a lot of those horrible looking building on main use to look nice like that.

Google has some outdated street view shots BTW

No, this building is not a dime a dozen, it is quite unique, and I am shocked the city is even considering demolishing it.

I know what building I'm talking about, based on how it looks, and I don't don't need to know the past names of each and every building to have an opinion on it. I've lived mainly down town my whole life and frankly don't care what buildings are called. I care about what I see And what purpose it serves... And no, I haven't been inside of every building. There are a lot of things I like to geek out about to... So I get where your coming from... But the fact that you know every detail about every building does not add validity to your opinion

I've lost a lot of building that mean something to me over the years to.. My grandpa taught me to go take a brick from the rubble and write on the brick what it was from so that you can always have a part of it... You might consider doing something like that... Perhaps they would let you take a glass panel from the roof.

If you really want to save that building I think your best bet is rallying to get it incorporated into the design... Maybe get ahold of the designer see what they say... I would be down with something like that... Assuming the front was restored.

Knowing the names of a buildings, current and previous, also helps you remember the history and uses of those buildings, and understand the significance, especially if the architecture doesn't already make that obvious.

Knowing the history and significance of buildings does add validity to an opinion about the fate of said buildings.

I've already tried that, it's just not possible to incorporate the building, it is smack dab in the middle of where this theater is proposed to go.

Although, I'm not sure why you're fighting me on this point: the location across the street is a superior location in every way for the theater, and the property owners are interested.

No.. I can look at a building and pretty much decide if I think it's worth saving or if I think it deserves further consideration in in about 30 seconds...

Like I said... That building has a nice ceiling... But how is it significant to people? Or how can it be used... Looking good isnt always enough... I defiantly think that making that a lobby to the arts center would be worth looking in to... Open up the walls between the pillars... That would be one hell of a grand lobby.

I don't think that it's realistically going to be move across the street though... So why not talk to the designer and see if it can be incorporated.. Might be kind of cool.

It's not that I'm fighting you on it... I just don't see it happing... Although I would much rather have it facing Main Street then 100 south.

I never said that would be a bad location... I would rather see a upscale movie theater there... But I would be just as happy if they ripped down the seagull-gate prison and the building on the corner and put it there... And that is just a long shot idea... Cinemark is interested.. But no developer is :/
