This little town is really starting to grow up. I'm keeping an eye on 77 12th from my office, and the food truck fest on Saturday right intown makes me thrilled to be back!

In other news, since it hasn't been posted yet:

That was a good read. If Atlanta does not imitate the successes of other cities in some way (and the article did point out football stadiums are much more difficult to integrate than baseball stadiums), then this city has failed with no excuses.

I took a picture of Olmstead (new restaurant in 1180 Peachtree in Trois' former location) on the way into work, but apparently I can't link to the Facebook photo I uploaded. There are tables, chairs, and lights on, and there was a a guy wearing a chef's jacket in the kitchen. Also, some of the posters blocking the windows for article14 have been removed and you can see smaller tables, chairs, and a large wooden counter. I didn't get a picture of this one, but it may open soon enough.

We're close to adding two new restaurants in Midtown! Anyone know what's planned for the lobby retail spaces in Campanille and Proscenium?

BUILD, BABY, BUILD!!!

Video - Midtown Skyscraper Construction Update #3

I took a stroll in Midtown yesterday to see how the Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites, Skyhouse and 77 12th St were coming along. Progress on all three projects is moving along very nicely. 77 is on the 5th floor. Skyhouse looks nice but that parking deck is huge. Look north or south on Spring St, do you think it's out of proportion? I do

Video - Buckhead Skyscraper Construction Update #1

I also went into Buckhead to check out Buckhead Atlanta and 92 West Paces Ferry Rd and put together this short HD Video: http://youtu.be/NKfxc6m4L9A

Oliver McMillan has begun "recon" work at the old Streets of Buckhead parking deck testing the viability of the rebar etc... According to a friendly construction worker, they will begin work on the other site (adjacent to Buckhead Library) in November. Looking at the video it's tough to gage the quality of the rebar (like I'm an engineer anyway... ) but it sure looks rusty! A little "Rust-Oleum" should do the trick... This development will fit in nicely with the rest of the Buckhead Skyline in that area...

92 West Paces Ferry Rd is ticking along nicely... The building is set back rather far from the road which should make it quieter in the luxury apts. Quite a large podium/parking deck for such a small building IMHO... But nice infil!!!

Great videos. Thanks!

Interesting info in Midtown Patch today about 77 12th street.

"The property is now pre-leasing apartment space with an initial opening of the sixth through ninth floors scheduled for May 2013 and the anticipated completion of remaining floors and clubhouse amenities by October 2013. Additionally, leasing efforts for retail and restaurant space are underway."

ARC hands possible Walmart project in Buckhead to Atlanta.

http://saportareport.com/blog/2012/09/ar...head-to-atlanta-suggests-other-land-use/

Hopefully the city of Atlanta will listen to the neighbors. Walmart's can be done right. Here is an example of one in being built currently. WOW! Right?

If we aren't going to make a deliberate shift to local economics we should embrace Wal-Mart. I think their anti-union and part-time labor activities are despicable but walmart is also a major hedge against inflation and unbelievably convenient. Maybe if we shorten the work week significantly people won't be so worried about convenience in shopping and we could try to do the local thing first?

As far as integration, do you think the new stadium fits better at the north or south proposed site? Do you think we need a new one at all? It's been interesting to see people's reaction to this. If Blank paid for it himself, I think we'd all be on board

Really wish they wouldn't tear down the Dome though...

If it's surrounded by a field of asphalt, it's a failure.

I wish the baseball, football and basketball were all near each other in downtown.

I don't know why people defend Turner Field but they do. It's in a wasteland of its own creation.

philadelphia's stadia are all in the same area, an even bigger wasteland than what's around turner field or the dome. i suppose they can share parking lots, but in philly's case they seem to be in an area that's totally an afterthought when it comes to urban design and planning.

The Walmart above would be great for Lindberg AND it has the parking deck above so that there can actually be pedestrian traffic!

A Publix or Kroger would be a much better fit in the area than a Walmart and only if it were built in like the Publix at Peachtree Place and Spring in Midtown.

The site plan for this Sembler/Fuqua development is an abomination for the Lindbergh area. And how sleazy of them to plan it out at exactly at 399,000 sq ft - just under the 400,000 sq ft threshold requiring a DRI by ARC.

But hey, it's Sembler. Hardly surprising...

If you are concerned about the Walmart PLEASE WRITE YOUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS (INCLUDING THE THREE AT-LARGE ONES) by this Friday and let them know. The vote is Monday morning.

visit http://citycouncil.atlantaga.gov for email addresses. Better yet, call them!

Interesting. I wonder if anyone will succeed in making Mechanicsville a sports destination, although it still feels so detracted from downtown. I wish Turner Field were right across from the current Dome. I doubt they'll replace Turner Field anytime soon, but that's where I'd want the new one to be built.

I got my hands on the Atlanta 1996 Olympic bid package, and the venues looked COMPLETELY different than what was built. I wonder how the new Falcons stadium will actually feel once it's complete. Having it higher on the Northside hill and on the same street as the Aquarium would be intriguing.

Atlanta-based developer sets sights on metro area

By Greg Bluestein
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta-based developer Carter has landed a string of major recent projects outside Georgia, and now is setting its sights within the state in hopes of sniffing out some promising deals.

Company president Scott Taylor said the company is hoping to launch a $50 million project for a health-care facility near Piedmont Hospital in 2013 and is considering another $50 million plan to build an office tower atop a parking deck at Lindbergh City Center.

“We’re incredibly hopeful that we can have some development in Atlanta in the near future,” said Taylor.

New development here would represent a homecoming of sorts for the company.

It is is a developing a $50 million project in Columbus, Ohio, a $73 million mixed-use deal in Cincinnati and a $40 million student housing complex in Oxford, Miss. It also plans about $100 million in deals in Louisiana and Oklahoma.

Taylor said the projects are part of the company’s new focus after selling its property management groups to Cassidy Turley last year. Carter’s strategy now includes developing student housing and multifamily and mixed-use projects, along with an expanded consulting practice.

A key focus, Taylor said, is tackling complex, large-scale public-private partnerships like The Banks, the vibrant 18-acre mixed-use center the company helped develop in downtown Cincinnati. Carter also considered a bid to redevelop the sprawling GM site in Doraville and is reviewing other projects across the metro area.

“Atlanta will continue to see modest opportunities for growth,” Taylor said. “We need to see some more job creation for us to really turn the corner. The opportunities for development will be intermittent but that’s not stopping us from looking.”

I believe the new office tower above a parking deck in Lindbergh Center would go above where Taco Mac and Tongue and Grove are located. It was in the original master plan. Seen in pink here.
