Regarding the hotel thing, there must be a demand here and from what i have heard, it is that we were under-hoteled for years. A perfect example of this is the year old Fairfield Inn Hotel on Ellice. Not only are they building another hotel on the same site but the Fairfield is developing a 6 storey addition to the recently built building. This tells me that they are already exceeding their targets after only 1 year. Business must be good.

City council's property committee has approved a Shindico Realty plan to convert 43 acres of land on Winnipeg's western fringe into a new commercial development called Westport Festival.

Shindico plans to develop 600,000 square feet of commercial space alongside Portage Avenue, west of the Perimeter Highway. Hotels and retail are planned for the land, which was purchased from the Red River Exhibition.

^ what other retail is missing out there currently? I could see maybe some sort of home improvement store, but this development will be working off the scraps of the IKEA area.

Very good question; I've been wondering this myself. The primary goal of the development almost seems to revolve around building a restaurant / hotel destination for visitors to the MTS Ice Plex / Red River Ex, and is in line with future exhibition space expansion at the Ex. The large big-box retail seems secondary to what the area otherwise 'needs.'

My guess would be a Super Target... some kind of grocery store... gas station... a sports store or two... McDonalds... Subway... maybe a five guys (they apparently want to open as many as 7 in the city)... cell phone store... pet store... another tims... Starbucks drive-thru... sushi restaurant... little caesars... throw in a bank branch or two (also with drive-thru atms).

All typical big-box stuff.
And a movie theatre.

Yeah, you could probably fill up about maybe 1/2 of the retail space with the above, but the rest??? No idea.

Waterpark?

Here is the site plan, it looks like two big boxes and scattered strip mall stores sort of what like Unicity mall has evolved into.

Looks like lots O & P are set up for drive-thru and lot M as a gas bar. Lot Q is probably a standalone restaurant like a BP or Swiss Chalet

seems like something targeted to be more accessible for the headingly crowd (& future sprawl)

I think the super tall 155 ft sign is funny; i don't really have anything other than a neutral opinion on it

No offense to anyone, but that is gross. I thought as Metropolis's we were passed these types of development.

While working for that horrible company (North American Midway) during part of the Ex, I got to see part of it being constructed. They sure took their time with that one structure, will it take as long with the entire development?

So much parking... and I thought Unicity and Kenaston was bad.

Well, looking at the map, Winnipeg Transit could pull off an extension of Route 22 or 82 to cover WestPort Festival. Maybe actually earn some ridership

I usually keep a sharp eye on Google maps, but I just noticed that they have that approx 45 degree bird eye view on downtown Winnipeg.

Civic parking garage closure is tip of the iceberg

On a Friday afternoon in August, the City of Winnipeg abruptly closed its parking structure on Princess Street. The parkade, built in 1966, was deemed unsafe after city engineers found concrete debris falling inside.
Unfortunately, the Civic Centre Parkade is not the only parking structure that may leave motorists worried. Many car parks in the city suffer exposed frames, rust, and crumbling concrete -- all of which risk the safety of drivers and passing pedestrians.
The Civic Centre closure has sparked debate among Winnipeggers regarding the upkeep of the various garages in the city, and has raised the question of just who is responsible for ensuring they are well-maintained. While city-owned parking garages are regularly inspected, some citizens have suggested privately held structures -- often as decrepit as their public counterparts -- should be similarly examined on a frequent basis.

Does anyone know where I can find that original residential proposal for what was I think either the arena or the Canad Inns site? The one with the townhouses, green roads, and apartments.
