Those jutting, provocative buildings would drive the repressed community association heads in Ottawa into Victorian-era hysterics! Especially the one on the left...

So theoretically, if she is so concerned with "out of scale", she would have protested Telus House on the corner of Bank and Slater a few years ago, you know, since it's so much lower, and therefore "out of scale", than the surrounding buildings.

honestly, I'm no fan, but anyone re-elected with that kind of supermajority is a FORCE. there's little point in musing about getting rid of her, when she is (at least in part) a creature of thousands of supporters. And there's no number of new condo-buyers in the ward that will unseat her, so there's still less point in hanging your hopes on "once all of these new buildings get built, the new residents will vote for..." because unless they're seniors, the new residents won't vote,* and if they are seniors, what kind of candidate will they be supporting?

* and while we're at it, we're only talking about a few hundred people per year, if that; e.g., somehow the population of Ottawa Centre only increased by 11 people in the last decade (between Census 2001 and 2011 according to http://www.redecoupage-federal-redistrib...dir=now/proposals&document=sched1&lang=e, and to pre-empt too many Tony Clement jokes, the short form of the Census was still mandatory in 2011)

New condo owners might vote for her as well, since she would oppose the construction of new, taller buildings that would potentially block their view.

unless they're old, they're so unlikely to vote in a municipal election (no matter how their interests may be affected) that they can basically be discounted completely. Make no mistake, I find this situation deplorable, but it is the situation I find.

Agreed. Young people have to be dragged to the polls at gunpoint to vote.

In 2010 my 30 year old, left-leaning, Centretown-dwelling civil servant friend was shocked to lean (at 10pm) that there had been a municipal election that day.

If only someone had informed her, she stated, she would have gone out and voted for the Liberal candidate.

I held my toungue on a lot of issues that night.

It's scary how some people are absolutely cluless about everything. Even when people don't know who John A. or Colonel John By (although a bit more forgivable) are.

Yeah, Colonel By is the guy that built a high school in Beacon Hill, right? I hate it when people don't know that.

I second that! Also, the city of San Diego was discovered by the Germans in 1942. They named it 'San Di-ego', which, of course, means "a whale's vagina".

Sorry, had to rehash that Anchorman quote.

Some people are indeed clueless.

True story: A little over a year ago, a co-worker who had just graduated from Ottawa U asked (and we were in a need-to-know profession) who "the current leader of the administration was".

Meaning "who is the Prime Minister of our country."

People think I'm joking when I tell that story, but I swear every word is true. In Ottawa, in 2011, a 23-year-old woman who had just graduated didn't know who the Prime Minister was.

makes me think that Councillor Holmes has few if any allies on Council and really should be on Planning Committee if she wants to move forward her own agenda. If ever there was a Councillor whose ward is active in terms of development/planning matters it is hers...yet for some reason she is not on Planning Committee...anybody have any insight as to why she is not on that Committee.

Because she won't bring anything intelligent to the table. Her answer to every proposal is "to tall", "out of scale" or "NIMBY".

didn't the mayor personally pick who would be on each committee? I seem to recall reading that they sent preferences, which he said he'd take under advisement when putting them together; but I imagine that his overarching concern was to avoid controversies and antics and maximize prospects for consensus on each committee.

Who cares, anyone as opposed to change as she is shouldn't be 'planning' anything.
