is there that big of a demand for hotel rooms in winnipeg? are they just estimating or projecting that winnipeg will have an enormous increase in tourist and visitors in the next 5 years, i understand we have a new museum and newly developed journey to Churchill exhibit but will they really be that big of an attraction?. Is there something they know that the rest of us don't? do they assume that centerport canada will increase the level of truckers flowing through the area therefore requiring more rooms for truck drivers who have to stay over night? with the new stadium and larger convention center will the city really attract bigger shows and concerts that it never did prior. I love the optimism that these companies have they seem to really expect the tourism industry to boom in the city considering how much their investing in hotels.

Its all really exciting though its like im slowly watching the ugly duckling turn into a beautiful swan. Things like rapid transit on osborne, alt hotel, and mb hydro are beautiful bldgs that are giving the city a more modern feel and look. Im sure once assinaboine park, shed area, and seasons of tuxedo are complete much of the city will be completely unrecognizable.

Every hotel in Thunder Bay is consistently at capacity, so I would assume that Winnipeg is experiencing the same thing. There are two things causing it: environmental refugees from Northern communities, and the mining boom.

They won't have much parking overnight in the Airport area. Flying J's would get a good business boost though.

And this city so far, is pretty much going to look the same until 2014, when we might actually get high-rises under construction, not quagmired in a bunch of red tape and hydro crews and public utilities guys attempting to locate a sewer or power cables... I'll still be able to recongnize Portage Place and Cityplace!

Remind me to make a law shutting up suburbanites, if I ever enter public office and have a plan put on my desk...

The renders look good too, and it'll be so expensive that probably only educated workers and their families could even afford it. It's not like it's Manitoba Housing on their doorstep...

I hate NIMBYs that believe that the vacant lot behind them will remain vacant for as long as they live in their house.

Agreed. On some occasions, as long as rational thought is applied, it is ok to be a NIMBY. In most however, they apply one line of thinking that involves; "How does this effect ME personally", not "How is this better for the city that I live in?".

Waterpark NIMBY at the Forks? Ok.

Mode and Verve Taché NIMBY in St. Boniface? Not so cool.

Anti-Restaurant Patio NIMBY in the Exchange? Seriously, it is time for you to get a ranch out in Steinbach.

Speaking of vacant lots, theres a land "for sale" sign at Silver and Collegiate for about $450k. That lots been my shortcut from the 24 bus stop, and a neighborhood recreation field (even though the Rods fields right behind my home) for years. It's airport zoning though, so nothing higher than probably 3-4 storeys could be built. Convenient Store perhaps?

I suspect most of the added truck traffic from CentrePort will justify a new truckstop located on the new Headingley by-pass (aka CentrePort Canada Way west of the Perimeter). Most of the truck traffic will completly by-pass the current highway as it will remain a 70 KM/H zone while the new one will most likely be 100 KM/H.

Architects of new building face challenge

In 1912, Winnipeg peaked. The cosmopolitan and bustling young city of 170,000 people was riding a wave of affluence and growth that was without rival in North America. That year, 5,328 buildings were constructed, a boom of prosperity that continues to define the physical character of our city a century later. With a population that had tripled in the previous decade, what had become the third largest city in Canada was the undisputed king of the Prairies.
As office towers pushed skyward along Main Street and new residential districts grew away from the rivers, Winnipeg's optimistic young population looked to cre

It's funny how often I hear this question, as a planner. And my answer is 'of course there's something that they know and we don't.' It's their business. Not mine. Mine is to say if a hotel is an appropriate use of the land. Not to say whether or not there are too many hotels, etc. That's a market decision. And maybe if one enters the market, a weaker competitor fails. That's competition.

Compare that to the taxicab board which seems to prop up the market by limiting the number of cab licences. Maybe that's not a fair comparison, but i've never understood why they do that.

There is a separate taxi cab board? In Ontario, vehicles for hire (cabs and limos) are controlled by the police board. (Or the taxi board is staffed primarily by and reports to the police, one of the two.)

I see maybe 2-3 people on Route 20 to the Airport from Polo Park, any day. Most I've counted was about 5-6. It cant be THAT much of a revenue loss. Plus anyways, they still get to make $$$ overnights and Sunday night, when Route 20 doesnt operate and Route 15 cuts down to a 30 minute frequency.
